An old Sony CDP-C500M 5 disc CD player, no remote, but works perfectly. Have added it to devices in my Logitech Harmony.  Cost me $5 at a fair.

One of those things that takes round discs. I believe some people still use them, like me for example. :)

Good score! It is unbelievable how fast things are changing.... Our kids keep calling the video player in our store room an "olden days" thing.... They don't even watch DVD's anymore with the HTPC.....

Was gutted the other day selling a perfect 21" CRT TV on trademe for $35....

Cheers,

Matt

Burning music to a disc just to play it is such an inefficient way of playing music IMO.

Its strange that a CD player is still a common thing for car stereos to have, and that the ones without it are generally more expensive than one with it. And daft how dvd-r never caught on for storing music on in that brief era when big USB drives were expensive.

I bought a new head unit for the car 18 months ago. It had bluetooth and USB and CD. I thought I would use the USB function heaps. I found it miles easier to just stream from the phone via bluetooth... Awesome when a call comes in. Mutes the music and takes the call.

Ironically the wife has exactly the same unit in her car just went and bought a bunch of CD's to play in her car because the CD's are easy to look at and work out where to find the music she wants! Yell

I have never used the CD in my car....

Aren't these things making a bit of a comeback?

Only among people that like the sound of analog distortion.

Thankfully its hard to master an LP with the same level of compression as a CD, so things often sound better on it, but thats nothing do to with the format, just they cant be such idiots when applying DSP to it when destined for vinyl. SACD was hopefully going to be the less overcompresed format, but its about as popular as DTS CD's were, as in nothing available on it.

It is actually quite amazing when you get a really well looked after LP and play it back through a decent stereo just how good it sounds. Its the quiet bits where the CD has the edge....

But then - the vinyl record is 100 year old technology - still amazing all the cleverness and digital trickery that went into the CD player just to replicate such an old media.... and yes - vinyl sales have increased quite steadily over the last few years - apparently they are quite a high status item.

The problem with mp3s (apart from heavily compressed audio) is they mostly live on items that dont/wont last long (mp3 players/ipods etc).
I still have 23 year old CDs that are perfect (and some 30 year old records). How many kids today are going to have their favourite songs hanging around intact in another 30 years??

yes, it is a shame that "who let the dogs out" didn't make it to vinyl! ;-)

I wouldn't count on CDs, I have several mid 80s-early 90's ones that don't play properly anymore, strange crap at the edges of it and pinprick like holes in the foil layer. I stopped buying abour 1996 so have no younger ones to compare it to.
