I have been looking at getting a 50" plasma. My current pick is the Samsung PS50C6500 basically the same as the C7000 just no 3D which does not intrest me and no pvr which is only available on freeview HD which is not available in nelson.

The price at HN is $1000 cheaper then the C7000.

Had anyone got or knows someone with one of these screens?

My reason for going samsung is the media streaming which I would use almost daily. I have read the panasonic are a better unit but not been able to find out if they will play media from the network.

Will also be getting a yamaha reciver and for now a basic speaker package so speaker quality is not an issue.

The Panasonic D (LED), S (LCD) V and VT series will play madia via a network. They play DivX and Avi files, MP3's and Jpegs.
I've used the PS3 Media Server, a Panasonic DVD recorder (the new Freeview one) as well as Plex and Twonky. I like Twonky the most - very easy to set up and only $28-$29 to download for the full media server software.
I connect via the wifi dongle, and it's quick enough for video to stream fluently, music is no problem too.

The 6 series Samsung looks nice (very slim), but to my eyes, they just don't compare with the Panasonic. They tend to over drive their reds - just check it out. Oh, and they have image retention issues, I don't think they're ever permanent, but it is a little concerning.

I've got the 7000 Series and I love it, are you sure about not wanting PVR function. Nelson isn't far off getting Freeview HD. (before world cup next year). I didn't think I'd be interested in the PVR function but it gets used every day, usually just to pause live TV so I can go do something else.

Also the C7000 series has ARC - Audio return, so less cables going to and from your TV to your receiver (assuming it supports ARC).

I was looking at the 6500 model also, but glad I spent the extra money, I think you end up getting what you pay for.

I had the Samsung 50" 7000 series plasma, but I returned it for a Samsung 55" LCD which should arrive today. It has an awesome picture, but the buzzing from the screen drove me mad. You'll never notice it in the store, but in a quiet house it's quite annoying during quiet passages. The Panasonic doesn't do it.

Also the anti jitter and motion flow technology puts a halo around anything that moves. You can reduce this quite a lot, but at the expense of smooth scrolling, which is one thing LCDs have over plasma.

Honestly unless you're comparing the screens side by side you probably won't notice much of a difference. Hum (screen and power supply), reflectivity, price, and power consumption are probably the main things to consider.

+1 on the buzzing. I have a 58" 7000 series Samsung Plasma. I love everything about it except the buzzing which is really annoying during speaking parts of movies. I am in the middle of trying to get this resolved with Harvey Norman / Samsung at the moment.

I really wish I could convince myself to be happy with an LCD as there are a bunch of screens I'd be happy with, but in the Plasma space, there are very few in the size / quality / thickness of the Samsung. Personally I'm hoping for a miracle and getting hold of a non-buzzy Samsung on Friday.

Cheers - N

L V Martin were awesome about replacing the buzzing TV, then letting me change to an LCD. I paid another delivery fee (totally fair), but there was no restocking fee and I got a small refund as the LCD was cheaper. They now have two TVs that can't be sold "as new" unless they're repackaged by the factory, even though I packaged them up in original materials.

I've not noticed any buzzing noise on my 50" 7000 Series.

Thanks for the comments. I was concerned with the the possibility of buzzing. I have bad luck with stuff like this. Bought a 27" iMac this time last year and it lasted 3 weeks before the display died. Took almost 2 months to get a replacement.

I was going to be getting it on finance but I decided to wait for the month or so it will take to save the money.

The remote that comes with the 7000 series is nicer than the ones that come with the LCD. The LCD itself looks just as good as the plasma to my eye, when i'm not comparing them side by side. Less motion blur (which can be eliminated easily), nice sharp images (often too sharp), and it just works. I'm happy.
