Hi guys,

My dad has asked for a new set of speakers for xmas to replace his ancient floor standing ones. My budget LIMIT is $400, preferably a bit under but we'll see.

He wants the nicest pair of floor standing speakers that fall within budget. No real other criteria except Im looking for a pair, not a 5.1 set or anything. He's fine with 2nd hand.

I've had a quick look on trademe but not in detail yet. What would you guys suggest? Are there any good stores to go to for speakers around that price (new or used) or should I stick with trademe, etc?

What would you guys do?

Cheers in advance!

I'd have a look around trademe for some nice floor standing speakers. Just ask to test them before hand and read around online as to how good they are.

What has he got now? why does he want to replace them? will you be replacing them with something that is worse than what he has already got?

And does he actually want new recevier so he can connect stuff up to it?

You may be able to fins some wharfedale Crystal 40's or Valdus Floorstanders around that price...these are very much entry level though...

OK thanks for the replies so far guys. Looks like the stereo wants 8-16 ohm speakers according to my dad.

Given budget, I think I've given up on new speakers as new speakers for $400 are crap :)

Got a couple of leads including some on trademe.

Anyone ever heard of Mermaid speakers (made in Denmark).

There seems to be nothing google about the speakers or company which rings alarm bells...

Saw a good price on a pair of POlk audio R 40s which, although older, get very good reviews. Anyone know anything about these?

Also, has anyone ever dealt with Sound Exchange in Albany? They are sellers of 2nd hand stereo equip.

I got Wharfdale Vardus (entry level) two mains, to surround, center, and sub for $1200 (less 20% discount) so you might be able to get just the front speakers for $400... maybe. Second hand probably makes more sense though.
