Looks good. But I'd like to know more about the player. At least the model number to do some homework.

It's a Soniq.  You don't need to know the model number to know not to touch it with a barge pole.

I bought one of their DVD players, it was the biggest piece of smelly stuff I've ever seen.  I returned it and got a Samsung.

If you haven't seen it before Soniq seems to be their in house cheapy brand.

The $30 soniq dvd player would play everything thrown at it which a much more expensive pioneer would reject. Now the internet has replaced dodgey asian dvds as where my content comes from, its not an issue anymore tho.

When a panasonic is $199 from bonds or noels, I dont think I would get a soniq bluray since there isnt the issue of playing badly pressed non compliant discs yet, and by the time that they are available there will be $70 players available.

Something I want to know is, since they both use mpeg4 etc, why are they not slapping a digital tuner into these cheap players too?

I've seen better build quality on a plastic sports car kit out of a Kinder surpise chocolate egg.

Very good point.

Most of those Blu-ray movies are $20-$30 each so at the least you're getting a $99 blu-ray player if you consider you're paying cash for the discs :)

And it upscales. I'm sure it's okay if you're on a budget.

Just make sure if you do buy it that you test it thoroughly as soon as you get home and return it if it's as bad as the Soniq DVD player model I bought (it would keep defaulting to very low resolution output).

Use a CC to pay too so you have that avenue if they get shirty about it, but IME JB are fine for refunds when products suck.

Im also sure that you could get more than $99 for the player on trademe from some sap who doenst look for comparison prices before bidding ;)

Not familiar with the quality of the build, as I haven't owned one. However, I have been looking at buying one as I understand from some of the aussie forums that with some of the Soniq's you can select the Blu-ray zone usine a code on the remote.

This would be very nice, as the pannys that I normally prefer are multi-zone for DVD only, and locked to zone B only for blu rays. Before I move to Blu Ray, I want to be confident that I can play Zone A discs, so I can order from Amazon et al (price, release window, range stocked etc).

Can't verify whether this is true for the model JB's are selling (I have asked) and I don't posess a Zone A disc to take in and try.

I don't believe the biggest issue will be in the region free aspect...
More in the firmware updates available.
If you can't get updates, it'll be landfill in a year or two when motion picture companies change their security formats...

It's a 'wow factor' deal, that, like many, doesn't hold up to much scrutiny IMHO.

Thats where extended warranty can be a benefit, but I question paying for it on something that cheap.

Perhaps one of the freebe ones that some gold cards add to things might help you out there, otherwise treat the player as the disposable item it is, like people do with dvd players these days.

We have a soniq which works absolutely fine. We had to get our own HDMI cable but thats standard for anything now days which is annoying. Couple of my favorite movies are up there but I don't see much difference between what we already have an blueray, except the cost. Lol
