Hi,

My partner threw the remote and it bounced and hit the TV shattering it. it will no longer display anything when turning on. I don't have insurance. Can anyone tell me what to do/where to go to get it fixed. I bought it from Harvey Norman.

Cheers,

Nick

How old is it?

I would have thought that that would require a new panel, which is probably worth more than a new TV once transport and labour is factored in.

With the money you saved by not having contents insurance, You can aford to  go and buy another TV.
Seriously though Get a good Contents insurance policy for nexrt time  that covers you for accidents....There has been cases of dogs and cats tiping over the TV.

Best thing to do is buy another TV second hand if on a budget or Interest free HP, theres some good deals at the moment

It's less than a year old. that is bad news if it costs more than a new TV. Is it worth getting a quote for it?

Must've thrown it pretty darn hard to do that sort of damage.  I doubt having insurance would've helped in this case anyway as it would have been seen as intentional damage.

Hide the remote for your next TV...

It is on interest free HP with GE CreditLine. Going to suck paying back something I no longer have.

Check your hire purchase as if you don't have contents insurance they will often make you take separate insurance to cover theft and damage.

I must agree with the comment on throwing it hard. Plasma screens have a glass (or at the very least hard plastic type compound) covering the sensitive innards so it must have been some powerful throw. Your partner isn't an Olympic discus thrower by any chance? Tongue out
Anyway in all seriousness, yeah I would check out your HP as like one other poster said, if you don't have contents insurance they will generally make you take it. Just depends what GE covers with that.

Thems the breaks with financing something that you dont have insured.

Banks make you insure houses and get notified if that lapes, but the admin is just too much for low value loans like TVs, plus none of the finance co's seem to bother doing repo anymore on things that are not paid so there is little reason to force insurance on people.

This concludes your life lesson. Go get a new TV. and a new partner if they are going to throw stuff around like that.

Live and learn I guess. She didn't actually throw the remote at the TV, it hit the carpet and bounced into the TV. I was surprised that it had enough force to damage it, the external glass isn't cracked - only the inside. Guess I'll just have to pay it off faster than planned and be sans TV for a bit.

Hi Nick,
Post a picture of the damage. I find it interesting that you say the screen has 'shattered' but the outer layer is undamaged.
It may be worth investing a callout fee for a technician to have it confirmed whether the condition is terminal or within economic repair.
New HD ready plasmas can be got for as little as $900 these days.

Ok I'll try to get some pictures of it tonight and post them. It has 2 fairly decent sized spiderweb type cracks as if the two corners of the remote impacted, however the external glass appears to be undamaged. I'm trying to find a service centre atm to get someone to come look at it. I live in Lower Hutt so not sure where a decent repair place is.

I'm not sure if I want just an HD Ready Plasma. I quite liked the 50" full HD :-( plus it played videos across the network or from HDD, basically every format available.

On the positive side... you'll be able to pay less for the same plasma this time around :-)
Prices on plasmas are dropping and dropping...

I have seen the outside intact and the insides cracked several times. One I saw even had all the shards of inside piled up at the bottom of the outside glass.

The outside stuff is tempered so it has a lot of bend without shattering, inside is delicate small fragile glass.

HA HA HA HA! Funny............................But true.

GE creditline is like a credit card rather than a hire purchase so only have payment protection insurance to offer if wanted.

If you still don't get contents insurance but want to pay off another TV you need to go with a finance company whom has the option of goods cover on their payment plan.
