I've been having a lot of trouble with my PC lately and blame my motherboard - it's an Asus M2A VM-HDMI which has been a total piece of junk since I purchased it.

I want to replace it with something with onboard GFX so I can replace my NVidia 8400 which is passively cooled but generates a massive amount of heat decoding H.264 stuff watching Freeview|HD.

My CPU is a X2 4800 which I will keep as I have no need to replace it, but may need to upgrade to get one of new newer MB's.

Anybody have any recommendations?

Windows or Linux?

I assume the X2 is AM2? That will make life a bit harder I'm 99% sure you can't put an AM2 chip in an AM3 board.

Ascent has 4 AM2 motherboards listed of which none would be any use without a discrete video card. (e.g. no integrated video or bad integrated video)

Being AM2 I'm assuming DDR2 and not DDR3 which makes the jump to a cheap CPU and motherboard combo that much harder.

If I were you upgrade to a whole new cpu, mobo, and memory or hold on to what you've got.

Gigabyte have a couple of AM3 boards with the 740G chipset that support DDR2, coupled with a new cheap AM3 CPU it might be your best option. Not 100% sure the 740G can do full 1080i properly though.
