While unencrypted HDMI is useful, I am not aware of many devices that actually output over unencrypted HDMI. Certainly my Panny DVD recorder used HDCP, as does my cheapie upscaling DVD player from DSE, and I suspect MySky (which I don't have) is the same. At least they haven't removed HD over component, so while of dubious usefulness being able to record unencrypted HDMI is "gravy" that doesn't impose a penalty to have.
While PCI-E would be nice for a permanent installation like a HTPC, all other things being equal I think I still prefer the external unit (and have actually just ordered one), as it's easier to move between boxes, and also makes it easier to capture using my Laptop.
My plan is to initially use it to transfer old VHS tapes onto my PC and, when I eventually get around to getting MySky, to couple it with an HDFury unit for capturing encrypted HDMI.
