1080i video (VC1 codec) doesn't work at all well in MPC-HC for me. 1080p is fine, plays with DXVA, but 1080i is a failure. A few frames seem to attempt to play, but then it all stops, black screen. Even the first few frames never appeared, in fact.

I'm using a G210 card, W7, AMP Phenom dual core CPU. Played around with the Transform Filter options, but nothing is satisfactory. Do I need a better graphics card? Or a better software decoder?

Thanks

Is the content that you are trying to play from a Freeview HD transport stream?

1080i is of course interlaced.
If you right click on the video while it is playing, there is a deinterlace (blend) shader that you could try.

Thanks don'tpanic42. I had tried the deinterlace shader, but it made no difference. I suppose the file would have to be at least sort of playing before the program could attempt deinterlacing.

What type of file is it...
e.g.
codec
bitrate
file extension
frame rate
etc...

Do you have any codec packs installed? e.g. K-lite codec pack

Actually I've had a breakthrough of sorts. Installed the WMVideo decoder DMO as an External Filter in MPC-HC, set it to Prefer, and the file will now play. CPU usage is averaging 65%. Switching the deinterlacing shader in and out makes no difference to that usage. The frames are perhaps not quite smooth, but it's hard to judge.

Anyway, that is some progress. Codec is VC1, bitrate about 25Mb/s, framerate 30, .mkv extension.

Did you want to stick with this program solely? Or would you be keen to try VLC player with the same file.

Support a locally made Linux based Operating System, try Linux Lite.

It's most likely the codec, VC-1.

If it's WVC1 you may need to have Windows Media Player 11 or higher installed for the OS to gain the ability to decode it properly. MPC-HC might be play it after that.

You could always transcode the file to x264.

I haven't tried VLC, could do of course, but rather concentrate on getting the best out of MPC-HC.

In the meantime, the VC-1 file plays, with about 60 - 70% CPU use, so I will put up with that.

Would a better video card, such as the GT430, help?
