Looks like its hot off the press, the XBMC team have released their ARM port with full functionality of iOS devices such as the Apple TV and iPad.

Requires jailbreaking the device as this sort of software is never going to make it into the app store.

The ATV2 is only $179 NZD, very tempted to pop down to DSE this weekend and grab one for a play!

Has anyone tried this on an iPhone or iPod touch? Would love to hear some feedback

Test is rather small on the iphone, would be fine on an ipad.
Can't figure out how to add a Windows SMB share...

I have looked up jailbreaking the ATV2, and from what I read, it needs another Mac to do a tethered boot from - is that right - and further to that (if it's correct) every time you need to reboot it, you need to do the tethered boot thing again.

1, I don't have a Mac
2, What a PITA.

Other than that, it's great, and XBMC on one of those cool little ATV2's would be mint.

The Jailbreaking guides I saw were using Seas0npass. Is there another way of doing it? has anyone done it yet?

This will rock when the upgrade ATV to full 1080p support

The XMBC jailbreak does actually support 720/1080... so it's close to being pretty sweet now. All that is needed, is the opening of the USB port.

And yeah, needing to teether upon re-booting is a PITA, but I think the future updates will get rid of this. I used Seas0npass and it all went relatively smoothly (pays to read the instructions). $170 gets you a lot of possibilities.

from what i've read the atv2 will DECODE 1080 but only capable of outputting 720...the original atv could output 1080 with the aid of a minipci graphics card...theres a good wiki all about what the different apple tv's can and cant do

I installed XBMC on my ATV2 which I recently bought from DSE, and I was not that impressed. I was trying to replace my Atom ION HTPC which is very smooth and fast.

The apple TV 2 IMO has a long way to go before it becomes visually appealing. Also I cant seem to get my Apple Bluetooth keyboard to fully work with ATV2, only the up/down/enter etc keys work.

Hopefully they will iron out the bugs soon, including hardware graphics acceleration for the menus.

Replacing an entire PC with a hacked ATV2?
No wonder you weren't impressed...

It's a first version, there'll be bugfixes galore no doubt.  It's skinnable though, so you're not stuck with the ugly default one if you don't want to be.

As for doing what it's meant to do - playing media ... it works fine with all my content streaming over wireless N.

Also have Netflix streaming running on my aTV so for a cigarette pack sized box I'm pretty stoked with what it can do :)

Seaso0nPass is the only one working for the latest firmware, and yep it's mac only and you have to tethered boot each time (not a hassle if you leave it running).

Expect windows versions soon enough.

I used greenp0sion RC6 final build for an untethered hack on an iOS 4.2.1 ATV2, worked out great and you could just install XBMC from a menu from within the ATV2, rather than having to SSH in (not that that is a huuuge deal, but worth noting).

No need for a rebuilt IPSW too which surprised me.
