I'd like to improve my FM reception for weak stations.

My VHF TV aerial is now redundant, and I know it must receive some FM because it had an FM filter when it was connected to the TV.

Will I be able to use the VHF aerial for FM radio, and if so, does it need any filter or splitter?

If it had an FM filter in it then it would most likely have beeen an FM Bandstop filter which is to stop FM signals interfering with the TV signals. It passes signals in the TV bands and attenuates signals in the FM band in which case chuck it away, you have no use for it. Try the antenna and see how it works. Certainly must be better than a bit of wire in the back of the tuner. Bear in mind that FM transmissions are neither Horizontal or Vertical polarisation but are at 45 degrees. The VHF antenna is also directional and not all FM transmitters are in the same location.
