I am currently doing the first stage of a rebuild of some of the key bits of my Home Theatre setup, as a precursor to a more thorough re-build of the rest next Christmas.

One of the components I have just ordered, which will be one of the core bits of the new setup, comes without a power supply (the only option from the supplier was a US voltage based power supply, and I need something that will work off New Zealand mains voltage). The bit of kit I have ordered needs to be fed regulated (+/- 5%) 5VDC power, with 500ma min current. This needs to be delivered through a 0.65mm diameter center pin, 2.6mm outer diameter, center pin negative, plug.

I need to find somewhere I can buy a power supply that matches these specifictions. Alternately, 5VDC is the USB output voltage, and I have a wall-wart with a USB output that can deliver 700ma, so if I could find a cable that was USB on one end with the requisite plug on the other end, that should (?) do the job.

I am in the wellington region, and have had a bit of a hunt through the websites of the usual suspects (DSE, Jaycar etc) without turning up anything.

I would appreciate any suggestions from those of you whose aptitude/experience with electronics is greater than mine about where I could source a power supply and/or cable that meets these specifications.

plug sounds like a 2.5mm nokia mobile charger give or take a bit. there are also usb to that size plug on ebay. so you could get one of those cables and a usb powersupply.

and dont bother with a nokia usb charge cable. they have a resistor in them..

Why not use the US Voltage power pack option and plug in to a Jaycar Stepdown Transformer (CAT. NO. MF10910 230v -110). I've done this with some US equipment I have and it works just fine. Easier than sourcing a suitable 230v plugpack and cable and about the same price.

I think I actually have a suitable power pack. It came as an AC adaptor for a 4-port USB hub from DSE (years ago). I also believe a PSP power adaptor (original or aftermarket) might be suitable.

Thanks for those suggestions - I will look at the PSP power adapter specs etc.

HT component arrived by courier today, so if I went with the US power supply it would be another ($US30 - ouch) courier bill, plus the cost of a step down transformer, plus the actual power supply cost.

On advice from an ever-helpful work colleague, if I can't find something readily available, I will try one of the outfits like Next Electronics to see whether they can make me a custom PS cable, and at what cost.

Curses..... (but I doubt they new that). Although, that might explain the horses head in my bed.

I may have to resort to the yellow pages. I'm sure that there are other service agents that will do a custom cable. I have exhausted all other options except enquiring with Jaycar - which is a long-shot as I can't find anything similar on their website.

Will also make life interesting for some of the retailers, as I understand a couple of the retail chanis and big brands like Samsung had outsourced their warranty servicing to them. Certainly it was Next that turned up when I had sumething fail under warranty.
