Is it posible to record a Freeview program using this setup?
If so, what do I need to do?
P.S. The TV is a CRT 32" widescreen

PC: Dell Inspiron 16 5640 (Windows 11 Home), Dell Inspiron 7591 2n1 (Windows 11 Pro), HP ProBook 470G1 (Windows 10 Pro), Intel NUC7I5BNH (Zorin)
Net: Grandstream 1 x GWN7062 Router, 1 x GWN7665 Access Point
Storage: Synology DS216play NAS, 2 x 6TB
Media: 3 x Amazon FireTV. Echo, Dot, Spot
TV: 2 x Samsung H6400 55" LED TV, Panasonic TH-P50G10Z 50" Plasma TV
Mobile: Samsung Galaxy A52 5G
Wearable: Gear S3 Frontier

At the moment, if you intend to keep the tv connected via component, I assume the Sony thing is a recorder?

You'll have to use a composite connection - or change your STB to a recording capable one.

Then once you change your tv and use HDMI (but your tv will have Freeview built int and therefor not need a connection to the STB), the component connection can be used on the sony box - but it still wont record HD I don't think.

I'd probably look at a recording freeview box - a tivo, or magic tv something like that.

You can hook up LRV from stb to Sony HDD for SD recording.

To record in HD you will need a FV HD recorder along the lines suggested by davidcole.

+1 for the above.
I run LRV from my STB to my Panasonic recorder to record Freeview in SD. Works fine.
I also run the optical out to optical in on my amp to get surround sound when available. Even the stereo is much better than the Tv speakers.

Just to be clear. Does this mean that I can keep the Component cables for watching AND also use the LRV for SD Recording?
I had assumed it was one or the other.

Yes. All outputs are active and I do this with my setup. (HDMI to TV and Composite to DVD Recorder)

But according to the manual for your STB only the HDMI output is HD (the rest are SD) so you will not be able to get the benefit of an HD picture on your current TV set.

Does your TV accept HD via component input? If not you will only ever get SD picture.

If it does you need a STB capable of HD output via component.

TBH, probably better to wait until the tv is being replaced and get a freeview capable one. Wont help with recording, but at least live tv will look pretty.

That would have been my next comment plus get a Freeview DVD Recorder too.

Ew no. None of those DVD recorders are any better than an old VCR. They still use times for recording. You want some that records off the epg, and if a programme is longer the next week, this is catered for.
