I have been considering starting a new HTPC project for some time now, and wondered if anyone here would like to help...maybe assist or contribute with/to their own ideas...

I have already built my own HTPC, but now I want to take the next step in evolution...

My idea is to merge a 42 inch HD LCD tv and my old HTPC together....
No more HTPC box....
No more cables....
Just a tv....no one would know otherwise until booted...(like the all in one Mac but bigger and Windows)

It would involve making a custom rear cover panel for my current tv.

It would also be designed in such a way so to allow hard drives to be swapped in and out and put into a portable case/cradle for transport...(just like a server)

I would buy some new parts as required, such as a laptop slot dvd player, rather than using my current 3.5 inch dvd player as keeping it all thin is important...

And the tv's infrared would have to be reconfigured to be able to control all components...tv and pc...

All thoughts and suggestions welcome

Instead of buying a laptop dvd drive. How about just buying a slim line dvd writer?

Yep...that's the idea.
I'm willing to butcher a perfectly good LCD TV to accomplish it.

If ya mean one of those slot type, perfect for slotting in a dvd vertically...that's what I meant too

You could get one like that I guess. I was thinking something like this but in looking for that drive I have just noticed these two... DVD and Blu-ray which are slot loading. :)

Why not just VESA mount a nettop? It would save butchering a perfectly fine LCD and allow for future upgrades.

I don't think that using a premade version is really what the OP had intended for the process.

Regardless, I have a 3D printer that can easily produce spacers or standoffs e.t.c. if you needed something along those lines and you can't find any in the stores easily.

Because for one, the screen is far too small on a nettop....or even a laptop for that fact......40 inch required minimum...
And for another, it would look just like a nettop, mounted to the wall...not three look I am going for...I want it to look like a TV, nothing else, but do everything a PC does.

That is interesting.....
I will have to research that as I want any setup to be upgradable.
And naturally, I only want the best.

Like that iiTV Media Centre... The only thing I'd think you should be careful in this DIY project is heat dissipation.

Nec make display monitors that the option of slotting in a computer on the back.
They are made for digital signage in shop windows or malls etc.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.
