Hi Guys,

I'm in an area where the terrestrial signal is fairly weak, I'm considering moving to cable TV as I already have internet and phone with telstra. I'm wondering if anyone has tried using this http://www.hdhomerun.co.nz/products/hdhomerun/prime/ with Telstra Cable TV?

My questions are:

Given that the channels are free to air, if I get the service switched on do I still need the card? (It seems weird to encrypt FTA channels)

And if I need the card, does anyone know if the card will work with the reader in the homerun package?

All channels are encrypted on TCL cable.

The HD Homerun has DVB-C and will work with TCL cable. You'll need a PC with appropaite card reader and software to support for decoding of the Irdeto encryption, as well as TV software that supports a softcam.

Just be aware that hooking up any non approved devices to the TCL network is breaking their terms and conditions and if you break things (ie ingress RF noise back into their network) you will be hunted down!

Cool thanks for that, by "card", I was wondering if that M-Card reader meant I could avoid the separate card reader for decryption.

Question answered though, looks like I'll have to go at DVB-T from another angle.

This is the second reference to DVB-C reader equipment accessing TCL in recent weeks here on Geekzone.
As sbiddle says - TCL will kick hell if you feedback RF noise into their system.

Pardon if I am missing the point but there seems to be a strong desire for people to use their own equipment if only to avoid the Tbox and/or make it easier to record programs to your PC harddisk.

Hence I always thought digital rights management was a key driver for TCL locking down the tBox so you cannot easily download recorded programs and stopping other equipment with DVB-C functionality accessing their network rather than technical issues? (excepting lost sales opportunity for tBoxes).

Is this right or am I missing something here??
