Okey doke got given an old VCR and it plays beautifully, however I would love to be able to record stuff from the idiot box, but all the recording functions appear to have been on the missing remote

The VCR is a JVC - HR-J291EA

whatever that means, Most of the universal remotes i have seen don't seem to support record functions, and the price of a replacement remote is a bit of joke considering VCRs are so near to extinction. Kind of hoping someone has an old remote lying around for one of these.

And yes i know I should get a freeview recording box thingie, but i am saving that until i have actually managed to get a proper job, doing odd jobs is just not reliable.

You will probably be able to buy a remote at the same place you buy your VHS tapes....
(sometimes some function buttons are behind a flip down panel)

Probably been mentioned before, but sometimes the basic harmony remotes are down to around $40 and they'd probably have your device in their equipment database.

When I had a JVC VHS, there was a crapload of buttons to do with the timer record on the remote instead of a nice logical menu, it had up and downs for start time and end time and stuff.

Right PITA to use, I bet they thought they were making it easier for people when designing it.
