Hi All,
I recently bought a 3D LED and connected my Bose V30 Lifestyle system to play BlueRay discs using my PS3. Initially it did not give me sound when I played BlueRay. I found some articles on the internet to fix this by changing PS3 Audio Output to Bitstream from LCM and it started working.

Upon further reading, I have found that Bose lifestyle systems does not support HDMI 1.4 (neither does their new models).  I even contacted Bose, and they advised the max we can stream through the system is DTS / DD 5.1 audio and not TrueHD. There is no support for 3D video as well.

Some BlueRay discs have TrueHD audio ONLY? Is there any way we can get around this by connecting HDMI directly to the TV for 3D and separate Audio adapter cable with conversion to Bose?

- I thought about Optical cable, but there were discussions on the internet that a TrueHD audio conversion has a loss of quality using this method.
- If I remove the PS3 as a source to play BlueRay and buy a Stand Alone BlueRay 3D Player, what are the options or models that can decode TrueHD and supply to Bose in DD / DTS 5.1 ?
- Is there any other options / adapters ?

Sorry if my question is a bit confusing !!

To get the benefit of trueHD, you need either -

An AV receiver capable of decoding the bitstream via HDMI (most modern receivers from 1 - 2 years ago or younger)
An AV receiver with HDMI input capable of receiving the decoded signal (PS3 decodes the truehd/DTS-HDMA signal and sends it as PCM audio over HDMI)
An AV receiver with 7.1 (or 5.1) analog inputs and a Blu-ray player with internal HD decoders and 7.1 channel output

There is no other way to get the full HD audio that I am aware of.

Given that your source is a PS3, you are pretty much left with options 1 or 2.

I'm not sure if the PS3 will allow dual digital output of its sound (over both HDMI and optical cable), you'll have to try it and see I guess, but you will be limited to standard legacy codecs (truehd downsamples to 640kbps dolby digital and DTS-HDMA downmixes to "core", I think 1.5mbps IIRC). The quality of the sound from this "downmixed" audio will be no worse than normal DVD (potentially a little better as not many DVDs have full bit-rate DD/DTS audio)

I think I read somewhere that although the PS3 will pass 3d video, it won't do HD audio and 3d then the PS3 may not be the best piece of equipment for your needs.

You may have to decide if you truely want to keep your BOSE system, if getting the most out of the new Blu-ray format is important to you, then the decision may already be made, Buy Other Stereo Equipment

I think some of the new Oppo Blu-ray players will do 3d and HD audio over analog outputs, does your BOSE system have 5.1 or 7.1 analog in? Theres not many players left that do analog out, even the new Panasonics which are all 3d have done away with it as an option (a damn shame in my view).

If it has HDMI input, have you tried setting the PS3 to decode the signal and passing it to the stereo as PCM, what happens to that if anything?

Good luck with your quest

Sen

Hi Sen
Thanks for the details, I did try Bitstream option on PC3 and Bose receives it as DD5.1 input, in this case its the PS3 that does the conversion to Bose. But this was on a Standard BlueRay obviously, not on a 3D one.

I am yet to check if by connecting a Opitcal cable PS3 is able to split Audio and Video to two different channels, as per some internet searches - please said they can do it.

Bose is something I was gifted and its an expensive equipment, so I really dont want to get into a situation to sell it just for streaming 3D and TrueHD at this stage.

I am looking to get a Sony BlueRay BDPS570 model player from JB (its on sale for 200), i think it does the HD conversion and hopefully i can settle with a 5.1 output from it coverted from TrueHD.

Do you have a fat or slim PS3?

Fat's can only internally decode HD audio, where as slim can do both - internally decoding or passing the still encoded data on to a receiver to process.

Really I suspect that the bose gear just isn't up to this, despite being expensive.

If you have a 3D TV then really I'd be looking at some gear that can utilise this.

I have the Slim version with 160GB. Its definitely Bose that is not up to the mark - they confirmed it.
I am looking for alternatives by keeping that as a sound source.

The 570 will not achieve anything that the PS3 is currently doing, you simply can not achieve any better than downmixed audio on your Bose system (unless as above, you can get analog into the bose)
