Can anyone help me choose between two 46’ LED TV’s – the Sony KDL46EX720 and the Samsung UA46D600. Both current retail for about $2300.

The TV will be used for an average of 1 hour per night watching Freeview that has been recorded on a hard drive PVR and the occasional DVD.

The TV will be wall mounted above a recessed gas fire place. Two walls of the room are essentially glass however most TV will be watched in the evening. I haven’t considered any larger than 46” as it will look a bit out of balance with the gas fireplace below which is about the same width as the 46” TV frame.

 Thanks

The Samsung will offer more vibrant colours due to the glossy panel. It should, in my experience, have better upscaling of lower quality footage too.
The Sony, though, will work well with any bright light from your wndows.
However, its viewing angles aren't as good as the Samsung's due to the matte finished panel, so if it's sitting up above the fireplace, you'll lose even more colour.

My pick in this case = the Samsung.
If it was my money, I'd buy a TH-P46GT30 Panasonic plasma, it'll slaughter both the Samsung and Sony IMHO. Picture performance (colour, motion processing, blacks etc).
