Can someone please explain how this media player works..

I am assuming you plug it into your tv...network it with your computer..and are able to play media from your computer to the tv using the nifty remote control?

I currently do this by using a media center remote control, but most times it just does not work on some files and it takes forever to get things to show up on my tv.

So I am looking at a faster solution...possibly one with a hard-drive that I could move around the house to other tv's in other rooms that connects easily.

yeah mostly network device with USB inputs (usb hdd, usb memory stick etc), plays network stuff via dlna and wmp 11 media sharing.

if all your tvs have hdmi inputs i would recommend a AppleTV 2 (basically same price, just a few dollars more, cheaper if you buy from apple.co.nz though (well refurbished ones are)) and then just put xbmc on it.

for one with a builtin hdd, i have a noontec v7, doesnt have network abilities (i think the v8 does), plays stuff fine, menus are pretty bland, but it was cheap (around $115 i believe) and you just put in your own SATA hdd (i have plently of these lying around so that didnt cost me anything). i wouldnt really recommend it, unless you just wanted something cheap for the kids or something. personally i would spend more for something more advanced. but its a pretty good cheap device, and seems to playback everything ive tried so far (1080p mkvs, xvid 720p, divx etc)

I would get the WD TV Live. Cheaper ($149 at Leemings in their flyer), more mainstream with regular updates and a good user community and, unlike the Apple TV (which only does up to 720p), it will do 1080p and doesn't require jailbreaking. I love mine.

get a samsung tv. plays everything from pc/hdd/media share :) via wifi/lan/usb :) i would not ask for more for the past 3 month i got an samsung tv.

before that i had noname hdd media player and wd tv live (which was awesome but also was a middle man for the job, which is now done by TV itself)

true apple tv doesnt do 1080p, but you can do netflix on it and you can rent movies from itunes on it, WD TV Live is a great choice, it just depends on what you want: 1080p or itunes store and netflix

note: netflix requires vpn or similar to work.

Not sure whether or not the Live will do Netflix (the Live Hub definitely will, and also has an internal HD which the original poster seemed interested in, but costs a bit more), and don't have a VPN & Netflix account to test it. That's one of the things on my wish list that I have yet to get round to. Fair point about Itunes though.

Have also heard good things about the AC Ryan and Popcorn Hour units, but haven't tried them myself.

Thanks for all your replies guys.

The WD TV Live with the Hard drive looks more up my ally. I really want something that can be portable and moved around. Can't really move a samsung telly around and plus we already have a large LCD tv at the moment. And I could move it to other TV's in the house.

But when we upgrade in a few years - TV's with those options will be something we will look into. And I am sure by then, technology will have changed and there will be lots more options.

I have not got a VPN yet...but will be looking at getting one to be able to use Netflix. But not sure what Netflix offers yet, as I you can't see anything if you live outside the US. So will find that out most likely when I get a VPN.

I'm using Netflix with a VPN - great content, but not so much new releases - and be prepared to use at least 1 GB a day of data watching movies and TV.
