Sony have this recall on at the moment here:
http://www.sony.co.nz/support/announcement/474826

It covers possible overheating of a component in these models sold between mid-07 to late-08
  • KLV-40X300A
  • KLV-40X350A
  • KLV-40W300A
We have a KLV-40D300A bought in this period (40", 100Hz, 720p)

Clearly not one of the ones affected (though close in terms of model code).

I have noticed for a while that a buzzing sound comes from the top right of the TV - there seems to be more heat coming out of the top of that side than the other side (but also there seem to be more components on that side when you look in).

They have said nothing can be done without me paying for an inspection fee.

Does anyone know any more details about specifically what is wrong with the affected models or what could cause a buzzing sound from the back of a large flat panel TV?

I read somewhere that 6 TV's (sold in Japan) have caught fire to date...
So I'm picking it's a cautionary thing. They'll replace a board and send you on the way.

From the link you provided: "Sony is voluntarily initiating a programme to perform a free inspection and, if necessary, a free repair."

So why have they said that you will have to pay an inspection fee?

Because it is not on the list. Only the ones on the list get free inspections.

A moderator needs to change the subject heading, as it is not a recall, they are just offering free inspections of those models. This was announced a few weeks ago in the UK too.

Thanks to Sony for the reply .. and we have 12 months to get it checked out. I wonder if I push it they will come up with the PS3 I was supposed to get when I bought the TV (and never received)

...
Dear Sandy,

My name is Jordan. Thank you for your enquiry and for your patience while awaiting a response. I have read your email and understand that you currently own a KDL-40XBR and may be affected by the following announcement: http://www.sony.com.au/pressrelease/asset/474881/section/consumerproductspressreleases

I can confirm that this announcement is valid for one year from the date of publication on a global scale. Once your unit has arrived into the US, you may have the unit assessed free of charge.
