I have recorded a few tv shows on my PC using a usb TV tuner. However I want to play them on a sony tv which will only play mpeg2 videos. Anyone know the best way / software to do this conversion? Prefer something quick, and I don't want o change the quality, just the format.

You can't just change the format, you need to transcode the entire video. Something like Handbrake is a good option, but speed will depend entirely on your CPU. This could be anything from 5-6 x realtime (ie 5-6 hours for a 1hr video) if you have an older CPU, to quicker than realtime.

Three basic choices here:

1. Re-encode, as sbiddle suggests. Handbrake, Mediacoder and Super are three of the many software packages that will do this. To keep approx the same quality the file will likely be bigger - MPEG2 isn't a terribly efficient codec by modern standards.

2. Connect the PC to the TV.

3. Invest in a media player (shouldn't cost too much) that can cope with whatever format you are recording in.

I don't believe that recent versions of Handbrake will transcode to MPEG2 - but it's great if you want to transcode from MPEG2 to MPEG4.

Avidemux

http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/

It's free
supports mutiple formats (more than most other encoders)
Comes with its own preinstalled codecs so no need to install other codecs.

On a modern computer should convert your mp4 (H264?) to mpg2 in less than thirty mins (for a one hour prog)

What about VLC player? I just used it to convert a vob to an h.264 transport stream for playback in my freeview box. Fast, free, no noticeable quality difference. I assume it works the same the other way round.
