Hi and thank you guys for reading this post.
the reason of this post is because I got tired of hearing the noise of my GFX card humming in the background while trying to watch a tv show or movie... so Im considering buying a 8500GT Silent card from a friend and it is this one GV-NX85T256H

0db noise but my question is would this card manage the HD content for my HTPC either HD dvd content or freeview |HD content without lag. does anyone got one of these in their HTPC any thoughts...

I have a 8500GT (silent) in my HTPC. Runs Freeview HD fine. Cant say anything about Bluray as I dont have a bluray player in it.

Yep should be. I have the 8600GT and understood the minimum (at the time) was an 8500GT.

I've done freeview on as low as an onboard 8200, so you'll be right as rain with a 8500

I used to use a 8500GT for both Freeview|HD and watching blu-rays. It did perform fine although I sold it in the end as I wanted to take advantage of the some of the additional hardware decoding that the later cards can do. I also was always a bit concerned about how hot the card got (was silent as well). Your case may be better but mine had very little air movement around the card and it used to get too hot to touch (70+ deg).

davidcole: I know the 8600gt has like twice the stream processors but as im not using this for gaming so shil be right.

I reckong will do for the lounge quiet HTPC as I currently have the HD 3870 making noise specially when I mute the adds.

I run a 8500.. got rid of the silent ones though cause they kept overheating and killing themselves..

my case have reasonable cooling as my HD 3870 runs between 37-39C and Im using only two 120mm 11db silenx fans,

but yeah they would get hot even with good case ventilation but if Im not gaming then shill be right eh snd after all I just paid 20 bucks for it and had very little use.

Just watching Freeview|HD content will cook a silent GFX card. I've cooked two silent 8500's in my PVR.

OMG how long did they cards last and what was your case ambient temp?
I have been running Freeview |HD with my HD 3870 and no problems but I feel I can reap the benefits of gaming capacity of that card instead in my other pc. and before the HD 3870 card came along I used to use my 8800GTS 512 G92 card and I reckong image was better but it just runs too hot at 57c idle.
I just give it a go and see,

It does also depend what kind of passive cooling system the card has. Mine had just a aluminium billet heat sink which was not good enough. The heat pipe systems are more likely to live I think.

oh bugger mine one has not heatpipe just the enormous aluminium heatsink with coper core contact area... to be honest I did not think that displaying HD content was that hard for a GPU with multi thread capabilities .

will give it a ago anyway if does not work I will look for a capable mobo with integraded card that can do the job quietly.

you guys got some cool HTPC setups there, how you guys optain your tv guide I tried of the web but WMC does not find anything for Palmerston North area and so two tunners and no tv guide it sucks.

I ended up sticking a 8cm fan near mine.. It runs quiet and keeps it all going with little problems - I stole the silent CPU heatsink/fan unit for my normal desktop cause the stock AMD one was like a jet-plane while playing games! ;)

another question about the card did you guys know if the 9800GSO 96 sp 768mb could do the job? i got one of those the only problem is just the noise... anyway but first im going to try the 8500gt silent.
