So Apple TV 2 eh?

OK I have read a bunch of threads on here and have some specific questions.

Bascally, what I want is to watch TVNZ, TV3 and YouTube on my TV without having to have my laptop connected to anything or on.

OK, I know there are plenty of devices that and options for this.

I have an Xbox 360 but to use that as a media extender the laptop has to be on, and at best connected, so that kind of defeats the purpose.

Alright, Blu-Ray spinning and USB media playback aren’t core needs. This is because I don’t have big enough TV for the Blu-Ray quality to be a deal breaker and I don’t have a massive content library for USB playback, with the new 3 strikes law (refuse to call it the ‘Skynet’ law) I am now unlikely to get one. This means a Blu-Ray player (PS3 inc) or WDTV et al probably aren’t for me.

I also don’t have $600 (more like $1000) burning a hole in my pocket so HTPC is out.

So, Apple TV2 + xbmc seems the best option for me.

So here are the ATV2 + xbmc questions:

Is there a ‘better’ program for jail breaking the ATV2? The main ones appear to be Season Pass or GreenPoison (think I got that right). Seems to be some people use one some the other, personal preference?

A ‘tethered’ jail break means that once you jail break the ATV2 if it is turned off it need to be reconnected to the computer again. However, is there any reason to run off your ATV2 once it is set up? Apart from moving house or something like that? This doesn’t seem to be such a big deal. Is there more too it than that?

With TVNZ / TV3 On Demand where to I get the plug ins that make these work? Do I need one for YouTube?

Does the ATV2 + xbmc support anything better than the supplied remote for entering data? I am thinking of typing in search terms etc. If so what?

What is the current deal with NetFlix and Hulu? Will the ATV2 + xbmc connect to these sites over WiFi or does it need to be plugged in or is being plugged in just better?

It seems VPN is required, I’m on Telstra, I have read the DNS threads and don’t need to cover that ground here. Is it relatively easy to load whatever drivers/ software/ firmware needed onto the ATV2 + xbmc for VPN? Does your computer, in my case laptop, need to be connected or on for this set up or to work? Connecting it all up for set up is OK but the goal is something connected to the TV which doesn’t need the computer to work.

As far as VPN goes I am going to follow this http://nztechpodcast.com/how-to-setup-netflix-in-nz/ anything more I should know? Again lots of threads, lots of different ideas.

As I understand it the ATV2 + xbmc won’t play back from USB is this right? But it will see files on a computer or NAS on the same network and play those. Will it do this wirelessly or does it need to be connected?

What is an ATV2 + xbmx like over a WiFi network generally? One connected to main TV would be OK another WiFied to the bedroom set would be awesome.

Anyway, thanks very much to the community for reading all of that. I know it may seem repetitive but a lot of the ATV2 + xbmc threads seem to contradict each other or go off topic. Sometimes into discussions of ‘traceroute’, anybody on here should read Halting State by Charles Stross; you’ll love it.

I used pwnage tool to jb, had trouble getting it into dfu mode, you need to be finicky about timing.
If you don't get iOS 5 version (old stock) you should be able to do an untethered jb.
Sometimes needs to be reset, will jam up.
Plugin is on git, convo on xbmc forums, make sure you down load and ssh the zip file onto the apple tv, then install from the GUI in xbmc (will then pull down some dependencies) I think it is called NZ OnDemand from Mark honey, there are some issues with it at the mo.
 Can use iPhone/iPad as remote
 Comes with youtube
Your ip address and apple id would preclude  access to Netflix
Can see any network share, SMb, afp, cifs
Runs fine on n network.
Won't run 1080p hd

Hope this helps,

Jon

I used Seas0nPass, works well enough for me. You need it untethered because yes you will need to reconnect it to the computer when you restart the ATV2.

There are TVNZ/TV3 plugins fro xbmc on ATV2 out there on there webs but I don't think they're very well supported. I tried a TVNZ one and it was buggy enough to be unwatchable.

Apparently bluetooth support (i.e. for your keyboard) is coming for iOS5 on the ATV2. At the moment you need to install BTstack (I haven't, the remote is fine for me)

There should be no difference (in theory) to using the ATV2 over wifi or wired. I don't have a VPN so can't comment on Netflix or Hulu. Though I did use Netflix while I was in the US and it was awesome, I wish I did have it :)

You can't playback from USB, no. It will play back files over SMB (through XBMC) wirelessly or wired

Another note, XBMC for ATV2 is still in development so it is still pretty buggy too. I get a lot of buffering issues, even when connected directly to the router. I think they're working on it now.
It can help if you format your videos to H.264 mp4s

OK, I haven't tried it but the link I posted makes it look like getting access to NetFlix is doable and not that hard.

The VPN links to a US server and this means that the service thinks you are in the US. If are one of the people who can explain the technical side better than I can, please do.

You have to pay for the VPN service and it does count to your bandwidth usage and it looks like you need to buy an extra router but it seems to work.

It violates the terms of service for NetFlix but that isn't the same as illegal. I would say more importantly, the content makers are being paid. They are being paid by NetFlix, but they are being paid all the same.

There are plenty of threads on here that cover this topic.

I have just finished setting up a vpn. Tried to get strongvpn working on a dd-wrt router and had all sorts of problems. Went to Astrill and all nice and easy. Currently on a 7 day trial with them.

I haven't had any buffering issues, but ran into the auto-updater crashing xbmc on the weekend when attempting to watch me some ondemand.

The instructions for downloading the patch to disable it are on the xbmc ios install page.

According to Seasonpass webpage, iOS5 jailbreak is still tethered and it does not support XBMC on iOS5. This looks to me like you have to wither downgrade a new ATV to ios4.3 or get an older one.

I just upgraded to the latest versions of ATV2 iOS5 and Seas0nPass even though its now a tethered boot. No problems so far. It supports the latest nightly builds of XBMC

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Oh, nice. Thanks for that. my WDTV stopped altogether over the weekend, so I think an ATV is on the xmas list.

Well I should say no new problems. I still get buffering on certain files, but there is a definite improvement. Files that should have played (i.e. standard def ones) now have minimal buffering that is much more bearable.
Most HD files will now play as long as I convert them using the Handbrake ATV2 preset.

I still get problems with Airplay disconnecting but I suspect that is to do with my router not the ATV2. Overall I'm happy with XBMC on ATV2 but I wouldn't recommend it for non-geeks haha

Some questions?
Are you all running nightly builds?
How solid are they?
How often are stable releases, what point is the cydia release?
There was a comment that the nightlies break add ons (the only reason I have it installed).

I'm running nightlies, they have all worked for me with the occasional hiccup like not resuming partway through videos.
They haven't had a stable release since the start of 2011 I think, probably won't be another any time soon.
I don't use add ons much but I did try the Youtube add on and it worked flawlessly.
