Hi, I went to Hoyts in Sylvia Park, to see the new Twilight movie last night. I was really impressed, with the quality of the cinema, and the size of the screen, and how comfortable the seating is. The screen, or at least the cinema I was in (Cinema 2) was absolutley massive for a standard cinema. half way through the movie, I need to get up to go to the loo, and if you go out through the doors at the back, you have to go through the projection room, to get to the toilet. So if anyone wants to see how a cinema projector works, go to Hoyts Sylvia Park! I would think the projection area would be a security controlled area! I was also amazed to see Hoyts for their Sylvia Park Cinema, they still use old 35mm film. Where as our local cinema in Henderson, uses digital, they still use film for maybe a small amount of movies, but it is mostly digital. Where as Sylvia Park is 97% 35mm film.

What would your thoughts be?

I love the Sylvia Park mall Cinema too, its absolutely world class. Especially the bean bag cinema, never even knew about it until I got asked to go one day.

And about walking through the projection room to go to the toilet, are you sure that you didn't just accidentally go through the wrong door? Lol. I've been to cinema 2 before and never had to go through there to get to the toilet, unless they've changed it. Still pretty cool you got to see it, quite rare in cinemas I would imagine.

Sylvia Park mall in general is amazing, love going there.

I like Sylvia parks equivalent of gold class, I know for those sessions you do get taken to your seats through the projection room. Thought that was pretty cool myself.

The cinemas are definitely nicer than our local at westcity.

If you get a chance have a look at the new Hoyts Cinemas in Hamilton (at The Base), its a new concept cinema complex so future hoyts will be shaped like this. Screens there look bigger than Event, also first cinema complex in NZ and AU to have D-Box motion seats.

Quite good cinema experience I will admit.

Shame it is let down by being horrendously expensive, stale food, weak coffee, and rude service.  You also can't buy a small anything, it's either huge or massive! (with a price to match).  The novelty of the DBox seats also wore off after about 5 min for me, after that they were just downright irritating and detracted from the movie.  Speaking to others and noting some comments on social networking sites it seems my experience there is not uncommon.  Almost everyone I know that has been there says it's not their first choice to see a movie, with Event Chartwell the clear favourite.

I hope Sylvia parks stays as it is, I have not been there but it sounds much better.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I agree about the price of food and such at Hoyts, Event is much cheaper. Also don't know if its just me but I find the seats in cinema 1 a tad narrow, event are nice and big

That's nice that they use 35mm projectors. As long as they focus the projector, the picture quality should be good. No chance of black crushing, colour over the top, and maybe oversharpening, as I have experienced off a digital projection system in Newmarket.

I personally found digital projection really good, really clean/sharp image.
The hoyts here has 4K projection (a form of HD I assume?) but I've not really noticed any diff compared to a regular 3D movie

Cheers for that,

I believe The Hobbit is being shot in 4K with dual-cameras for genuine 3D, can't wait for that

I don't go to the movies anymore. The base is usually deafening with the voices too fuzzy to easily understand. The picture quality is often atrocious.

The Hobbit is also being shot at 48fps
