Can any helpful person give me any info on which Region free Blue Ray players are out there in NZ, i am looking for one hopefully between the  $ 150 - $200 range. What could be the best deal i could get.. And do they ALL play those original DVD's??

I haven't bought a new DVD player for ages!!!
Many thanks in advance for your help/comments.

At that price unlikely. The expensive Oppo is the only one I know of but I did hear of a cheap brand that depending on the batch number could be made region free. I think it was Soniq brand..

What kind of region free? DVD? Blu-ray?

I got a Memorex Blu-Ray player from Firstin a while back (<$100). Its region free for Blu-rays but Im stuck with region 1 for DVD's as there is no method to change the DVD region. Its noisy as heck when it plays DVD's so I still have a region free DVD player.

A friend recently bought the Veon home theatre setup (VN2921BR), and using the Soniq unlocking codes mentioned in another GZ thread, I can confirm it does region-free DVD and allows the changing of Bluray regions seemingly without limit.

In my experienc Sony models are DVD Region free when purchased and Panasonic will be made Region Free by one of their sevice agents free of charge within 12 months on production of sales receipt.
Just take your discs into a store and ask to try them on their demo models. If they want the sale they should oblige.

Just bought one on Friday and quite happily plays my region 1 copies of the LOTR trilogy and the Firefly series.

You might want to have a read of this thread from a few months ago when I bought a blu-ray player. Ended up with the Sony 380 which I have been very happy with.

Yeah, recent Sony models are usually all good for out of region DVD playback, had no problem here either

I've been told that Toshiba do a region free BluRay player that'll play any BluRay you throw at it. Don't know the model #, but it's around $200'ish. Worth taking region restricted BluRay's into a store, trying it, and seeing how things work for you?

Samsungs are usually very easy to unlock for DVD, just search online for samsung hacks and you will usually get a number of hits (I've done 3 sammys this way). Panasonics can just be taken into a panasonic service agent to be made unlocked for DVD.
I was under the impression that BLuray players cant be unlocked for bluray regions (someone will correct me if i'm wrong though).

No issues with my Samsung. The retailer gave me the instructions to unlock DVD region. I may stand corrected, but AFAIK you can't get a BR region free in NZ.
