i am wanting to purchase some surround sound headphones that i can connect to my home theatre system. As well as being able to use them with my laptop and listening to music on my phone.

The primary use will be getting surround sound through my home theatre system when watching blu-ray and also gaming.

I do not want one with a microphone as i am not into online gaming.

I don't know about surround sound headphones that don't have mics but if you have an ability to get S/PDIF output from your HT system then this device works well.

JVC Surround Sound Adapter

It takes the digital DD signal from any device (receiver, S/PDIF output from your PC, BD player) and creates a surround sound effect using Dolby Headphone in any headphones.

And I think even if you feed in analogue stereo it will produce a surround sound effect.

I have one and while I haven't used it recently, it works pretty well. You can check it what Dolby Volume os here

I run a headphones website, though I haven't heard any surround sound headphones. Given that headphones are just two speakers I think it's a gimmick. Just get a good set of regular headphones, like the Sennheiser 558 or 589.

Don't know about surround sound headphones but having read the post I dragged out my JVC device and connected it to the S/PDIF output of a DVD player and played a title with 5.1 audio. The JVC device decoded the digital input and output a Dolby Headphone signal that was startling like haveing 5.1 audio in your ears.

Though there are only two speakers if you will in the headphones, Dolby Headphone createss a very realistic 5.1 soundstage through advanced psychoacoustic processing that's very apparent as you switch it on and off during playback from a true 5.1 source.

I must try it out on my PS3 playing a 5.1 game such as COD (well actually I will have to ask my son :-) )

It does a pretty decent job of Dolby Prologic II when presented with 2 analogue channels also.

I have a set of logitech G35's which are surround sound 7.1's all though its a virtual dolby thing. They do work, in BF3 i get positional audio, and movies sound amazing. Also there is enough bass to rattle you head :) My flatmate is a baker and is in bed at 9pm so its perfect for me.
Its not quite what you after as its connects via usb, but just letting you know that surround sound headphones do work and they are worth the extra money.

we can hear surround BECAUSE we have two ears ehich gives direction to the sounds we hear in real life.

i guess the way simulated surround works by simulating the sound signals as they would be IF in the real world the sound comes from front and back and left and right from the 5-7 speakers.
