I'm playing around with an old PC as a HTPC, I want to connect it to the tv but configure it and do updates etc remotely over the LAN. Do I just need to configure the windows 7 remote desktop? My understanding was that was for connecting to PCs not on the same network. There is probably something simple I can use another PC on the network to control the HTPC.
Any suggestions welcome.

a) seem to chew up cpu even when not connected
b) they run in the 'console' session and get in the way of media activities (i use the multiple desktop rdp trick so that i can do the pc tasks without interrupting the tv playback...
