Hey Guys

Hope this is the right place for this thread :)

Ok, so it was Boxing day and there was a sweet deal on a LG LED television at JB Hifi (42LV3730) and I went ahead and bought it yesterday, could not bring it home right away as I was working so paid for it and collected the set today evening.

Bought it home and all setup and plugged in, sweet, started up and played with it for around 20-30 minutes, checked everything works. Switched it off. Not at the wall but on standby (using remote)

Went to get some groceries and back in approx 40 mins, switched it ON again, again using remote, the red LED turned blue as if it is initializing, thought it might be normal for it to take 1-2 minutes, but nothing would happen!

Have tried unplugging it entirely for 2-3 mins and starting up again, no luck, it starts up, I can hear a buzzing (processor fan - like but very quite) sound at the back, there is a "Click" sound when I power it on & off using remote, but no display/sound whatsoever!!! All buttons on the remote tried to no avail. Input mode change does nothing. Touch panel buttons on the front respond but nothing changes. The screen itself appears as if it has been switched off.

A little background information here :

1. Purchased and installed a Belkin surge protector with the TV and using it through it from the word GO

2. Have tried to see if it would work without the surge protector in a normal power outlet, no go.

3. Have powercycled the unit a few times now.

4. Other electrical appliances are working well with the surge protector.

5. Connecting a USB hard disk to the TV set powers up, the display remains blank though. Means the unit itself is powering up.

Not sure if this some sort of a energy saving thing I might have switched on (unlikely nothing I do can cancel the feature) or is something blown inside the TV. It worked perfectly out of the box for those 15-20 mins but hasnt after that.

Any ideas / suggestions are welcome. About to call LG care tomorrow and see if they have something to add. Also lets see what JB Hifi have to say incase its a unit failure. Will keep you guys posted.

HELP!!!

All but dead on arrival. Ideally go for a refund or replacement. You don't want to wait for it to be fixed and often when a product is broken so soon like that there may be a pile of other QA failures waiting to show up in it.

How much did it cost?

Since it was DOA you should just be able to swap it for a new one. I would ring the store first and speak to someone from the AV area and tell them are bringing it in for replacement. JBHF have a time frame that determines replacement vs repair and this should be well inside that. They should be able to tell you if there is stock, or if you are really lucky that your TV is just in a mode, and how to fix it (vain hope I know).

Hey Guys

Yeah was pretty much DOA, took it in today and they happily swapped it for a brand new one.

Had to come straight to work after that so haven't quite taken the new one out of the box but will be setting it up tonight.

Will post here how it goes...

The chap at JB said while it was not uncommon for this to happen, its very rare. Scary, may I add!

Update : Setup the new TV and it works fine.. lets see how this goes.

Thanks for your suggestions guys! Although I was not quite sure, but my $10 indoor TV antenna bought from the warehouse gives me crystal clear Freeview (built in to TV set). Is this right coz JB said I will need a dish antenna.

This way, I think the digital switchover should not affect me then right? :)

I find it scary how much FUD shops put out there concerning DVB-S and DVB-T. Looks like you are well covered by the Freeview|HD DVB-T service if you can pick it up with bunny ears. Welcome to digital TV!

You would only need a dish if you lived in an area where you couldnt get Freeview HD (via a UHF aerial).
In your case you must live in one of the larger population areas that get freeview HD - fortunately it sounds like the signal is strong as well. Those little aerials are not always the best for Freeview HD.

The freeview satellite version is standard definition and used to cover the whole country - including people in black spot areas that cant get freeview HD because they live in a hollow or on the wrong side of a hill or something.

If you had needed a dish you would also have needed to buy a freeview satellite tuner box as well.

If you are indeed seeing freeview HD then you are correct - you wont care about the digital switchover..

Got to wonder about some salespeople. You can't connect a dish direct to a TV. Got to have a satellite tuner in there somewhere.
And yes you are set for DSO as you are already digital.

Great!!

Honestly I was not expecting the $10 bunny ears to work with freeview because (as above) I got told I need an external UHF antenna or dish and then plug the cable in to the TV to enjoy. I wouldn't need a STB as TV has freeview built in which makes sense.

Now the bunny ears (like the name!) are inside my bedroom just beside the TV table and on the floor, the quality of audio/video is very very crisp. No complaints! The same with my other Sony Wega 29" which is now for sale meant some channels were good but not the best at all. Current setup looks like its made for each other (freeview inbuilt + indoor antenna)

Saved me some money I must say...
