Hey guys,
I bought this TV on boxing day:

I have a digital receiver (The Jazz Speaker JE-006) which I want to connect the optical output of the TV for sound. At the moment normal freeview doesn't output sound over optical properly with the JE-006 going crazy with the input from the TV. That's not such a big concern for freeview but for movies etc. I'd much prefer to have surround sound. I'm hoping this crazyness is just for Freeview?

I'm looking at getting this blu ray player:

Which I would connect via hdmi to the TV. So my hope is the sound goes via HDMI to the TV which then gives it to the receiver in dolby digital 5.1 via the optical cable.

I also have a Wii (which I'll get the HDMI converter for) and XBMCLive computer (also connected via HDMI) which I'd like setup in the same way.

Does this sound feasible and is the TV capable of passing the sound from HDMI to the optical output in dolby 5.1?

Before you guys start mentioning I should plug the sound directly into the receiver a) it only has one input and b) I want to really control everything via the TV.

You should be able to get digital 2 channel PCM OR Dolby out of the optical out from the TV, I think there is a menu setting for controlling that in the tv's menu.

For the problem with Freeview if you have a PC around with a sound card that has optical in you should be able hook the optical out of the tv into that and test/double check it is working. May help you figure out whether the receiver is the problem.

Yes.
My 32ex720 does and my son's 40ex720 does.
I wasn't aware it did til I tried it.
Doesn't work if the TV sound is set to PCM though. Just get stereo then.

Yeah the EX series does, don't see why the CX series wouldn't considering it's newer. Though it is a lower end range than the EX.

Also I think the EX series do HDMI ARC (audio return channel) on HDMI #1, so if the receiver supports ARC you don't need the optical cable at all.

Yes, they do. Very handy with modern Receivers.

Ah cool thanks for that guys. By the sounds of it (no pun intended =p ). I just need to hook everything into the TV via HDMI and then set the tv to dolby digital and I'm off!

I'm not sure I need ARC as the HDMI won't go into the receiver first (since it's pretty basic lol):

Last question, That $99 bluray player at JB Hifi looks a real bargain however I have a $30 DSE voucher. The cheapest blu ray player they have is $130. Do you think they'll match the JB Hifi price so I can use my voucher?

Talk price with them before you even mention the voucher. Most of the chains seem to price match these days.

Hey guys,
Thanks for the advice. It's all plugged in and works really well. 5.1 content comes through as 5.1 and 2 channel as 2 channel. The only thing which doesn't work is normal anaolgue which I guess is PCM and causes the receiver to go crazy.

Yes I would say plugging an analogue source into a digital input probably would make it go a little crazy....
