Looking for users of a Samsung series 6 TV (models above 6400) that have PVR built in. How well does it work?
I'm thinking of ditching mySky, and although Im aware of myFreeview recorders as replacement - the thought of my TV doing the job with a simple USB hardrive is very appealing. Especially when in the market for a new TV anyway...kill 2 birds...

So who has used it? - does it record a programme when on Standby?, how is the EPG?, does series link?, pause Tv etc etc?

any other TV models (other than Samsung) have PVR built in?
cheers
Mike

During a recent TV purchase (at least, helping someone else buy a new TV), it was pretty much between the Samsung UA46D6600 ($2599 with the PVR) and the UA46D6000 ($2299 without PVR).

The difference in price between the 6600 and the 6000 was $300, whereas a TiVo unit was going for $199.
With the PVR built in to the TV, I'm assuming it would have been a single tuner, so whatever you were watching at the time, is what you would be able to record. It's possible that it might have had a twin tuner built in, though.

On the other hand, with a TiVo unit, you have a 320GB hard drive to start off with, which means you won't have to buy a separate external HDD to attach to the TV. On top of that, you essentially end up with three tuners. Two channels recording on the TiVo at the same time, and then watch a third on the TV itself.

We ended up going with the TiVo in the end, as the price was just too good. And also went with the UA46D6000.

That being said, the TiVo is back up to $299, but that is still a great price for a 320GB dual channel Freeview recording device.

The built in USB recording is pretty much only good for 'live pause'.
You're locked down to recording just one channel at a time, and that has to be the channel you're watching.
For instance, record TV3, but want to watch C4?
You can't do it at the same time...

I'm pretty sure you can't record via the EPG too. Can anyone confirm?

Basically, keep MySky.
