Hey GZ'ers

I have xbmc live installed on my pc and just bought a Phillips SRM7500 remote. There is no IR receiver on the pc but I have plugged in the USB RF Dongle to the PC. The LED on the dongle does not light up when it is plugged in.

Is anyone able to offer me any assistance in getting this going? I am a Linux Noob but can follow directions well. I am using Putty to run commands on the XBMC PC from my Win7 PC.

Have you tried reinstalling LIRC? I assume the USB FR dongle came with the remote? e.g. they are a matching pair.

I've found remote support in XBMCLive to be a bit flakey, reruning LIRC normally does the trick. Should just need to choose Mircrosoft MCE options.

You assumed right. The dongle came with the remote. The dongle receives signals via radio frequencies rather than infrared. I found linux driver packages for the SRM7500 but do not know how to install them on linux.

The package is on Sourceforge  http://sourceforge.net/projects/srm7500-linux/

Using putty, what commands would I have to enter to reinstall lirc? I tried sudo apt-get but got a message back saying lirc was already installed. How do I get lirc to receive commands from the USB dongle?

The dongle is seen by the kernel

Try sudo apt-get remove lirc and then reinstall it. When installing lirc there is a wizard that ask you to select your remote and IR dongle.

If that doesn't work try posting on the XBMC forums.
