Hey guys,

Looking to upgrade the home theatre shortly but my budget isn't very high unfortunately. I've been looking at this here: http://www.jbhifi.co.nz/home-theatre/pioneer/5-1-home-theatre-system-sku-26235/ but really would prefer to have larger floor standing speakers for the front left and right.

Something along the lines of this: http://www.jbhifi.co.nz/jb-hi-fi-home-audio/speakers/jamo/5-1-channel-speaker-pack-sku-17805/ would be perfect except I can only go to about $400-500 for speakers.

Can anyone suggest a similar speaker setup within my budget? It would be perfect if it was bundled with a receiver to cut down the cost a bit.

I know for the price I'm not going to be getting anything high end but I am just looking for a nice entry level Hi-fi setup.

I bought the Jamo 5.1 speaker package in your second link, my first proper home theatre package. I can confirm that they are excellent speakers, worth every cent. I'm definitely not a sound or home theatre expert, but if you can stretch your budget to fit them in, I reckon you won't be disappointed.

The Pionneer which does HD decoding, supports 3D etc. The Sherwood does not and is a very low end unit. The speakers will all me much of a muchness I think at that end of the scale. They will do the job just don't expect anything amazing from them.

Do you really want gear that will compromise your movie experience every time you want to be blown away with your favourite flick?
Do you really want equipment that struggles to deliver the timing, the control... required to produce compelling music listening?
Spend more - spend it right.

Now instead of searching sites and getting confused, how about posting up some of the facets of your situation that may allow us to help you more?
What do you put the most emphasis on? Gaming? Movies? TV? Music? Streaming content?
How big is your room?
What are the floor materials?
How far do you sit away?
Do you NEED satellite speakers are the rear? Or can you run floor standers?
What will you be plugging into the amp? TV brand / DVD player / console / BluRay / STB / CD player / turntalbe?
What music do you like to listen to?
Who will be using the receiver?
Will you use a learning remote (Logitech etc?)?
Do you have pre-existing amps / speakers / cables?

Okay I'll answer those questions as best I can while not at home but unfortunately, as much as id like to, i can't spend any more atm really (my parents are the ones paying for it all :p)

It will be used for movies, TV and every once in a while I may game on it when I feel like playing on the big screen. PC gaming btw, not PS or Xbox. Any streaming would be done off a computer.

I can't be sure of the room size without being home but I would say its about average size for a lounge and has carpeted floors. The couches are ~3m away from the screen.

The receiver will have a blu-ray player (HDMI) and Sky STB (component) plugged in and a laptop/desktop every now and then.

Any type of rear speakers will be fine.

There will be very minimal music listening so I don't want that to influence the decision at all.

I have a Sony DAV-S880 currently, but want to upgrade to blu-ray and HDMI connectivity. Would also like a setup that will allow me to upgrade parts rather than having to scrap the whole thing like with the Sony. Other than that there is no other audio equipment to use. The TV model is still undecided but it will be a 40-46" 1080p plasma if that helps at all.

The people using it will be me and my parents and sister. I don't think we will use a universal remote, I don't want that to be a deciding factor here.

Hope that clears a few things up!

Not sure thats overly fair. I purchased a Pioneer/Wharfdale combo about 3 years ago, which would probably be considered an entry level set (cost me $1200, IIRC). I've been very impressed with the output from this setup. I'm no audiophile, but I can be pretty fussy when it comes to how my music sounds. We use it for DVD and BluRay movies all the time, and the sound never fails to impress.

From Harvey Normans. Like I said, it was about 3-4 years ago, but you may be able to get similar packages now, as they seem quite common.
