I'm at a bit of a loss with my somewhat basic set up and its frustrating the hell out of me!
I'm currently running a Onkyo Tx-SR309 receiver (3HDMIout1in) With a Warfdale Crystal series set of speakers, A 51" 3D Samsung plasma, and my ps3 which I game and watch blu-rays through.
What I'm wanting is to have HD sound, what I'm doing now is PS3-HDMI-TV for video with PS3-AVSCART-Reciever for sound.. I have tried a number of different combinations that I would have thought to be right, but am failing and I really cant see how or why. I'm sure there is a very simple answer that is obvious as all hell that I'm missing, hence the distress blog.
Cheers.

You don't mention which model PS3 you have.

For both models you need PS3 to receiver to TV with HDMI. For the fat model, you will need to convert the audio to PCM, for the thin model you can bitstream all audio.

illicit: Ps3-Optical cable-receiver

Optical cannot do HD audio, except stereo PCM. It must be PS3 -> HDMI -> Receiver.

If you have the fat PS3 make sure the "DB/DVD audio output format (HDMI)" option is set to "Linear PCM"

Also make sure the audio output options under the sound menu have all the various audio types selected

The PS3 will convert the HD audio (and DD etc) to PCM then output it to the amp, the amp will display PCM as the format.

There is several sites that list the options, here is one

My bad, I assumed the receiver was an HDMI switching only unit.

So yes, the above is correct PS3-HDMI-receiver-HDMI-TV

Has the ps3 resolved the issue where it can not do 3d and HD audio at the same time?

On the slim model yes, it can do DTS-HD and 3D at the same time (not sure about T-HD though).

The fat one still has that issue

Success! I had the right idea, it was actually a simple setting on the receiver that was stopping me. A rookie mistake on my behalf, I know! Now I can finally use my set up to its max potential, now if only my daughter wasn't in bed already.. Ah well, guess I can wait another day to really give it to it.

Cheers all!
