Hi all,

I am trying to choose a DLNA compliant NAS device to use with my network receiver. I have a few questions I hope someone can help me with. Note: Both the NAS and the receiver will be wired to my home network by CAT5 Ethernet cable.

1) Should I get NAS with user replaceable harddrives?

2) What type of drive connection within the device is best - USB 3 bs SATA etc

3) Will an android device be able to copy content from a NAS device via a home network.

1) Yes
2) SATA
3) Yes, you can get a CIFS (Windows file sharing), FTP/SFTP clients for android..

Pretty much all the major consumer NAS brands (Qnap, Synology, Netgear, DLink etc) have a DLNA server as a feature.

Some devices have compatibility issues with DLNA, usually on the TV side that's the problem, what make/model TV do you have?

It's for an Onkyo NR-609 network home theatre reciever. My TV has no network functions.

The receiver will only use audio files on the NAS as it doesn't stream video at all.

There are some firmware updates for the model relating to DLNA (eg: September 2011)

In theory any NAS with a DLNA certified server should work with the receiver.

So the next questions become how much do you want to spend, how much space do you need?

I have recently purchased a Onkyo 1009 which works fine for audio via an ACER Aspire EasyStore H340. The NAS is a couple of years old and possibly not the most popular NAS on the block since MS pulled the plug on Home Server in favour of Home Server 2011. However, I have loaded up quite a bit of CD library and it seems to work quite reliably with DLNA.

If you want video you could look at a media player. There are a couple of models that are small and cheap as chips (circa $120), such as the WD Live or Ac Ryans, which are pretty capable.

DLINK DNS-320 is probably the lowest cost one you can buy and has reasonable performance (at least with dual disk support and raid).
This servers up music to my Yamaha AVR.
