Hi all, this topic has been discussed before but no solution was posted. I just got one of these receivers in Jan 2012, pretty awesome unit all hooked up to my NAS, appleTV etc etc. One issue though, it intermittently cuts out for a few seconds and then turns back on. The display blanks out when this happens and a loud thud sound from the speakers. The other issue is when the sub woofer is set to a good level and you get the loud sound effects like explosions or those random Bollywood songs Laughing, then the picture gets choppy just like when you fast forward a vcr tape.  I don't think it is a heat issue because my cabinet is Fan cooled using a digital temperature controller set to 28 degrees. Has anyone with this problem had any joy sorting it out?

I've got the same model and don't have this problem. I'd take it back to the store. According to another thread, apparently Onkyo's are prone to HDMI problems, so maybe this is the case.

I had a nearly identical issue with my 608... I fixed it by getting a refund from JB after they took it for service and then forgot to send it to anyone to fix for over a month.

Fortunately I guessed they would screw up the repair somehow and replaced it with a Yamaha before I sent it in.

I have heard others have had success getting it fixed, but I have heard terrible things about the turnaround time. You have to play the game sorry...

I don't know where you got it though, but do not let the retailer make you deal with the service agent directly if it's still in warranty. Make the retailer do it... This means if they screw it up etc you'll have an easier time getting a refund.

Cheers - N

Thanks, I go it from JBHiFi, looks like they got a big container load to get rid off. I will take your advice on getting them to sort out the repairs if needed.

Mine is in a cabinet with no cooling so gets hot but I have no issues.

Perhaps it is your HDMI cable? Could be either the receiver->TV HDMI cable, or the player->receiver hdmi cable.

I had a network media player with similar symptoms to what you describe, and it was the HDMI cable at fault.    (I was getting flashing black lines in the image too).

Another thing to check, is the receiver HDMI video output setting , try setting it to a lower output resolution and see what happens.

You could check the firmware version, mine had a fairly old version OOTB and there was a massive update that took best part of half an hour to apply. I doubt it'll help though.

HDMI cables could be a problem, i do have a few different brands in there. I will have 10 new cables arriving in a few days so I can change them all to be the same. I also have HDFuryII connected to my Sony Projector so this may add to the mix. The problem occurs when watching movies via AppleTV or Panasonic BluRay. Radio works ok.

Software is up to date, just did an update a few weeks ago. Thought that might solve any problems but hasn't.

The part that interests me the most is the video getting choppy...
So HDMI issues could be the main thing here, swap out cables / TV to double check the cause.
Of course, it could be the video scaler, or, indeed a lack of shielding on the speakers...?
I'd swap out cables, then take it to JB's and make them do the testing + leg work for you.
