That is the downside of living down under. We are far away from everyone else. The speed of light and the distance it has to travel is what we are dealing with (physics, am I right).

I am also getting around 300ms+ to the servers I work on. But I guess I don't spend enough time in Vi to have felt the pain. Although there is hardly a day when I am not using Vi on some of the servers I use.

Indeed, latency was expected when planning the move. It's in no way unworkable, and both of the two VPSes I work on regularly will eventually be moved - one to NZ, and the other probably to the US. One thing I'd look for if changing ISP is to actually get closer to the advertised speed most of the time. I sometimes get up to 950ish, but at other times of day it drops down towards 100 mbps (wired, on confirmed good cabling).

One thing I have discovered is that if I upload big files to Dropbox and then do a wget on the server I get good speeds all around, vs. trying to do a direct SFTP (or similar). Has been a great little "hack" for me.

That's a clever trick, I'll keep that in mind if I need to shuffle anything big across continents. I have memories of doing similar stuff in the past, when bandwidth was weak between certain points.

Generally, what lives on those servers just gets worked on there, and then a server at my house does a nightly backup, so I'm never really actively waiting on any downloads.
