I've recently moved to Christchurch from Sweden, and keep stumbling onto Geekzone when researching various subjects. I was in a bit of a hurry to get connected as soon as possible and signed up for 12 months with MyRepublic without having done much research. This is what happens when fibre is just one of many things on your todo list while in MIQ ;)

My background is in Unixish systems and networking, but in the last decade I've also done a fair bit of software development. When not working, I like to wear my legs out by running, cycling and snowboarding up or down hills.

Welcome to Geekzone!

I am PeterReader, the Geekzone Robot. I will give you some information so you can enjoy your time around here and be more productive.

First, everyone follows the Forum Usage Guidelines (FUG). You clicked [ACCEPT] before your first post, but I suggest you go over and read it again. Any questions, ask away.

There are many features around this forum. If you want to get the best out of Geekzone, check our Geekzone Guide.

People around here can be funny. When reading a comment don't take it personally as everyone here knows we should always attack arguments not the people behind them. But if you see some sarcastic jokes, it happens. With time you will see there are lots of people who post around the forums in a variety of topics. Those more frequent posters help us make sure the community is safe.

If you feel you need help, look for freitasm, our BDFL and send him a Private Message (PM) by clicking the email button.

We have a few accounts on Twitter and would love if you followed us: @geekz1, @geekzonenzforum, @geekzonenzjobs. You can also use watch forums and topics or use our RSS feeds to keep on top of discussions. Check the menu items on top and bottom of all pages to find out more.

If you see that the time in these posts are wrong, check your profile page and make sure the correct timezone is selected.

If you want to help the community you can subscribe to Geekzone or make your purchases through our MightyApe affiliate link. We also would appreciate if you white list Geekzone in your ad blocker.

Lastly, just enjoy your time around here and I might even reply in another of your posts!

@MaxineN lol

@linus welcome, mate!  I'm sure MR will be ok for a year, and you can switch later on.  One of my team uses them and is happy with their service.

Welcome to the bottom of the world. 😁

Do you use "Unixish systems" at home?

Welcome! I am into running and I enjoy doing half marathon events, but unfortunately a lot of them are getting cancelled at the moment due to the pandemic.

Thank you all :-)

And in response to:

MaxineN:

🤣

Well, I hadn't spent enough time on here by then, so I didn't know :)

In fairness, I haven't had any problems, other than high latency to Europe (which I expected - need to move a few VPSes closer, since using vi over SSH is a pain in the proverbial.

@ANglEAUT Yeah, these days it's all Linux, whereas in the older days it was a mix of mostly BSDs and Solaris.

@Linux Yeah, Sweden definitely has some lovely areas, too

@alasta It's a shame about cancelled events, I'd signed up for the Crater Rim here in Christchurch but that got canned. Luckily though, I'm only a couple of km away from the Port Hills, so I have permanently sore legs anyway ;)

Welcome.

I am a happy MyRepublic customer, but most others here seem to hate them with a passion.

Personal evidence.
Was with them for 5 months and the experience was very shoddy. Frequent issues with streaming(twitch streaming not watching twitch streams), WAN drop every week in peak times and lacking support. hell I even paid for their gamer plan because in my case I do need a public facing IP. in the "gamer discord support" I was not the only one facing issues I can assure you.

You probably haven't experienced what I have and good for you but as an ex customer I'm staying the hell away and will be advising others the same based on my own experience.

What is your ping like? I am often on servers in Norway and Europe via SSH and have not had any problems.
