I have worked in the telco business since last century and some days it feels like I have worked in IT since the century before that.
Previously employed at FX Networks, Ultrafast Fibre Ltd, Velocity Networks Ltd, Wired Country and Go Live Ltd.
I know some stuff about layer 1 and layer 2, but my knowledge diminishes as we travel up the OSI layers.

You will notice I tread carefully when posting in these forums. I will tend to only state facts that are to be found in the public domain and it goes without saying (but I'm saying it anyway) that my opinions (TWEIE) are mine and not someone else's.

I have rejoined the world of self-employment and most of my work is sourcing services for small, mid sized ISPs. If you're an ISP looking for transit, layer 2, billing systems, end-user driven filtering or some magic trick you can't find then please get in touch.

I'm also a trustee on two charitable trusts, one operates The Meteor Theatre, the other facilitates internet access for parts of our community who don't have it (www.wawt.org.nz

Clearly not that old... I recall selling 300mb ESDI 5-1/4 full height drives for a lot more than that iirc.

I also recall a 200mb 9" drive being delivered for the IBM36 that needed a pallet jack to move to the computer room.

I can trump your $1 per Mbyte hard disk easily, weep at the $1800 I paid for a 140 Mbyte hard disk in about 1989, nearly $13 per Mbyte or $13,000 per Gbyte.
Compare that to 9c per Gbyte we pay today.

ROFL. I think I win. My first 5 MB HDD (yes, five megabytes) cost US$ 5,000. I jumped of emotion when I managed to buy my first 850 MB HDD for US$ 500.

And before that I was playing with mainframes, CP/M and MP/M.

alright, alright - here we go...... Now I had to punch my own holes into the tape, solder the ones and zeros onto the mainframe - wait 6 months for my job to be processed - then they tell me there is a syntax error and no, you can only compile your code once a year!!! Try telling that to the kids today, they won't believe ya...

Seeing as this is my thread (and I don't like to lose a p***ing match) I'd like to suggest one rule when boasting about how much we paid for hard disks back in the olden days is that any claims of extravagant expense should be from one's own pocket rather than that of an employer. Does that level the field a little ?

Sure... mine was a present for my father, I was 18 at the time, first job out of school, was 2.5 weeks pay at the time...  I didn't even own a computer of my own at the time... (well unless you count the Commador Plus 4).
