We (my wife and self) operate an iMac in our home office. Currently running Lion OS 10.6.8. I'd like to upgrade to the latest but am weak on understanding the techno stuff. Do you have any comments to help me decide on what to upgrade to?

Welcome. If you mean "upgrade to the latest OS" you should have access to the Mac App Store on the version you're currently using. Simply purchase OS X Mavericks via the Mac App Store and let it download, then run the installer and it will do the rest for you.

If you mean "upgrade to the latest computer" and you want to stick with the Mac, any of the latest generation iMac's will be a fit for you. It really comes down to what size display you want.

Yep, as was mentioned there should be an application called App Store on your iMac. This is much like the iTunes or mobile App Store for iPhones etc or the Play Store for Android.
OS 10.9.2 (AKA Mavericks) is the latest operating system and I believe that everything you're running on your current system should be fine with this new OS. It adds a few goodies and seems to generally run things a bit faster than older OS's. A nice thing about this OS is that it's free.
Just updated an old iMac myself recently and things seemed to run better after a couple of restarts.

Check what Apps you are using before you upgrade.

For example Filemaker Pro 7 runs fine under osx 10.6.8 but will NOT run under osx 10.9

So although the OS upgrade is free you may have to pay for Application upgrades.

Technically there is nothing wrong with 10.6.8 and I manage quite a few machines that run it.

Thanks for the comment. I can't use ooVoo on 10.6.8 but can on later versions. I'm considering if this is sufficient reason to upgrade.

Welcome. Be sure your machine can run the latest version before you buy it. I made this mistake a while ago, I bought Mountain Lion, assuming it would not allow me to purchase it if it was not compatible, only to find it was indeed not available to me and I could not install it.

Mavericks is able to be installed on their iMac and there is a direct upgrade path from their current version.
