Hi All,

A geek from way back (I'm 51). Started out with Intel 4004's around 1975 then 8080, 6800, 6809, 680xx, PIC, ADSP-218x, and recently AVR32. In the 80's I made Pascal compilers for 6809 and 680xx with most sales going to Europe. Still prefer Pascal over C so normally do projects in Delphi before downgrading to C for portability.

Since 1990 I have been doing software (and some hardware) design for a company that manufactures earthquake recording equipment. GNS Science uses our equipment for New Zealand's seismic network.

I've been to New Zealand 3 times in the last two years. My most recent trip was for 8 weeks, staying with friends near Masterton. I've looked into emmigrating to New Zealand but current policies don't consider one-person companies profitable enough to import.

I currently have a G4 Mac Mini (now relegated to service as a web and Subversion server), an iBook, and a Intel Mini which is my main development platform. Most of the actual development software is running under Windows using Parallels. I got an iPhone last week but don't think I'll bother opening it up to unlock from AT&T using the "short an address line to 1.8V" method. I'll wait for a software solution.

From Oregon,

Bob

Hows the iPhone?

An interesting piece of technology. The panning and zooming using the fingers is well thought out. It's smaller than I thought it would be, wish my vision was better. I used one of the fake activation methods that are around so all the non-phone features work (except youtube, which I don't care about). At this point it replaces the functionality of my Ipod and my old Palm PDA (wifi broke on that recently). With the addition of a voice recording application it also replaces an old "micro-cassette" dictation recorder that I use to record flashes of brilliance in the middle of the night :)

I'm sure there will be a hack to unlock the SIM at some point, it would then replace a Motorola RAZR. What would be really neat is to have Skype working on the wifi.

I don't have Vista, so no. Thanks anyways.

Fossie: Hows the iPhone?

Just got the free unlock installed. Of course I ordered the paid version (which I probably wouldn't get until the end of the week) from the Aussie, wonder if he's giving refunds? Works fine using my prepaid T-Mobile SIM roaming on Unicell: http://www.certsoft.com/iphone_unicel.jpg

Put in a prepaid Vodafone NZ SIM card that I bought for my next trip down. The phone didn't complain, just says "No Service" :)
