Hi guys, I've been a reader of the Geekzone news for quite a while now, but after finding some useful information in the forums when I was Googling, thought I'd join and participate. I've already come across some familiar names here.
I work as the Vice President of Blindness Hardware product management for Freedom Scientific, a Florida based company that manufactures hardware and software for blind people. This includes the popular JAWS for Windows. Fortunately, I'm able to work from NZ most of the time, although I'm required to travel regularly for meetings, conferences etc.
I've been in the IT industry for a few years now, having previously worked at HumanWare here in new Zealand, and before that I ran a network of Internet radio stations.
I'm totally blind myself, and have been using computers since the 1980s (even ran a BBS or two which I'm sure dates me).
I use Windows Vista and XP on the job and for work. I also use a PAC mate, which is a Windows Mobile-based PDA that will speak what is on the screen as well as display it with a refreshable Braille display. And finally, I have a Nokia E61I running screen reading software.
For me, there's no question that the Internet is the most exciting thing to happen for blind people since the invention of Braille. When pages are designed well, blind people are given access to a huge range of information we couldn't access independently before, such as newspapers, bank statements, information about bargains, and of course e-mail just to name a few.
I rely on telecommunications to stay connected to my colleagues, so use Skype, other VOIP clients etc extensively.
I think that's about it. Looking forward very much to reading and participating.
Cheers,

Jonathan

Hi Jonathan, welcome to Geekzone.

I can't even begin to imagine the extra effort and concentration that must go into using technology when you have impaired eyesight (or indeed, none at all), let alone make a career out of it.

I used to run a BBS back in the day. I started out with Renegade, and moved on to Telegard after about a year or so. The ability to interact with so many people with a computer and a telephone line was simply awesome. I was a Fidonet point, and a node for many other messaging networks, and had a sizeable local user base, and busy local echoes. But as with most of the BBS world, the internet took over, and BBSing became less attractive.

Whereabouts in New Zealand are you based?

Thanks a lot for the reply.

Actually, I have my speech rattling away at 500 WPM+. Screen readers are very efficient at presenting the information required, so I don't think it takes too much more concentration or effort, although for some the learning curbed may be a bit more steep. Where it does get tricky is where web designers choose not to include ALT text on links, use Flash without its accessibility features, and the worst one of all, use captcha without any audio equivalent. Blind people are increasingly being shut out of forums and services because of captcha. The most remarkable one I experienced was in the air, on a Lufthansa flight to Frankfurt. They had the Connection by Boeing service on the plane, so I got out my trusty Thinkpad and tried to sign up. At the end of the process, they asked me to type the characters on the screen. Give me a break! So I had to ask the passenger next to me what the characters were.

Yes I remember all those BBS packages, that brings back memories. I ran PCBoard, Remote Access, Wildcat, and probably a few others I forget now. Fidonet was fun, I still remember my node number, 3:772/50.

I'm based in Christchurch, a legacy of when I worked for HumanWare.
