Hello all. We signed up to this on a workmates recommendation as he was fed up of us always asking questions. So we are going to annoy everyone here by asking questions - and some of them will seem really dumb! We arent geeks of any kind, and are often pretty clueless when it comes to computer etc. We have a list of questions, but I'll see if there is another forum to ask them on. If not, I'll just reply to my own post and ask away in here.
OK, couldnt see anywhere logical for these questions - please let me know if there is. So, here goes...
Our last computer crashed, we bought a new one. We kept the hard drive from the old one and got a box etc for it. Our new computer runs Vista, the old one Windows XP home. We plugged in the old hard drive, but cant access the files. The list of everyone on it comes up ok, but whenever we try and open something it tells us we cant as we dont have permissions. We went to properties > security > advanced > owner > changed the owner to the name we are logged on under, ticked the replace owner of subcontainers etc box then hit ok. It did its stuff, took a while, but we still cant access anything. Whats happening? We do have a back up of all the files, so thats not ahuge issue. But we'd like to be able to clear the drive so we can use it as extra storage with this new pc. What do we do next?
Family overseas asked us to hook up with yahoo and/or windows messenger / chat, so we did. Along with google talk. Google talk seems pretty straightforward to use, but not the others. yahoo seems the worst! how do we get our contacts into windows messenger and invite friends to chat? It seems really user un-friendly. We have a telecom xtra webmail account with our new broadband, and this seems fine to chatting (typing not speaking) to others using yahoo or hotmail. Stil cant invite, or dont know how to more like...but would love to use either yahoo or hotmail/windows live as a chat thingy as we can talk as well as type. So advice...directions...HELP!
Someone else suggested we downloaded something called Pidgin which covers all the chat sites in one site. Is this right? is it any good?
See...total non-geeks...clueless and frustrated. All help much appreciated!
