Hi I thought I would start this forum to see if others collect PDA's like I do and what you have in your collection.

I started out in 1996 with a Pilot 1000 - unfortunately I don't have this anymore. Over the years I have collected a few PDA's/Pocket PC's/Handheld PC's/PDA Phones and the collection is still growing. Not in any particular order I have:

I actually got to meet Jeff Hawkins a few years ago. Jeff invented the Casio Zoomer (at GRid) and then went onto invent the Pilot. He also started Handspring. A very interesting guy.

Im gonna be the saddest case around here... only three devices. Cellphones on the other hand - i'd have a fighting chance at a top 5 spot there. (Mind you, 3 devices puts me in the top 3 so far!!!!)

Sony Clie (forget the model. 8mb b&w screen) (returned after 3 months kept crashing)
Ipaq 1940 (died after being left in extreme cold overnight, came to life 4 MONTHS later)
HTC Harrier (still got this)

i had a psion 3 for a while, that was my first

next was a philips Nino. That was a wince beast, and i wish they still made pdas. this was in 1996, and that pda had voice control, and even voice dialing (to dial it produced dtmf tones that you held near your desk phone microphone) and nav buttons (up/down) under you thumb on the side of the pda, great for ebooks
Lotsa little innovations there that have since vanished from the pda world.

Tried a ipaq for a while, but it was unstable and unreliable. I grew tired of hard resetting and reinstalled (restore never really work) and activesync would so often refuse, or not complete it's routine. My negative opinion of pocket pc began here.

next i went for a psion revo, which was the most polished pda i've ever had.

but i missed the colour screen, and got annoyed with IR, so i got a Tunsten T with bluetooth.

This eventually died and so i put familiar linux on the old ipaq.

That tied me over until i got a Tungsten T3.

and.. this very week the Palm One lifedrive is expected. I'm anxiously waiting for it to hit NZ stores, so i can snap up the first one i see.

Wow Taniwha a Philips Nino. I used to have a Nino and Velo because I was the Product Manager for the range. They were good products.

I worked for company called Insite Technology at the time and I also launched Pilot into NZ. We were the first market outside the US to launch Pilot and we were the first distributor outside the US to sign an agreement with Palm. I remember when I started doing Pilot people said it would never take off and I think in the first year I did 500 units. By the time I left 3 years later I was doing 1000 units a month!

Its amazing how the market has changed with people on their 4th or 5th PDA.

hi Jama.
any ideas why philips left the pda market?

i still use my nino 300 for reading ebooks. The removable battery, large (monochrome) screen and those page up/down buttons on the side make it the bet pda i've seen for ebooks.

also, the simple 2mm DC in plug is something i'd like in a modern pda.

it's a pity it didn't have headphone socket.

It was a strange time for Windows CE when Philips left the market. I think it was CE ver2 at the time and it was crap. Microsoft knew that and were rewriting the whole OS which became CE ver3. Sales were low, there wasn't a lot of software and I think at the same time as Philips, NEC also pulled out of the market. I just don't think that the demand predicted by MS matched the actual sales.

It only been in the last few years that PocketPC sales have taken off....

not sure about the velos

phillips are notoriously bad at supporting their old hardware. - drivers and support disappear within a month of a sucessor appearing. The philips.com/nino site vanished very quickly.

But i still like philips. They make alot of their products in the european union, which means there are labour laws and the workers recieved a fair wage. - I don't believe the same is true of products made in China. there are many reports of china using prison labour, which has lead to a high demand for prisoners and the corruption that follows.

sad stuff -- i like philips :-)
