Hi Folks.

I'm a recent arrival to Auckland, having just moved here from San Francisco, California.  Been working professionally as a sysadmin, programmer, and all-around hacker for almost 15 years -- and I'm thrilled to be doing similar work here in Auckland (and very thrilled to be outside of the US at the moment).

I'm not thrilled about the fact that I was just told that Telecom is "out of ports" at my exchange, and won't give me an ETA on when my (Orcon) DSL will be installed.  Anyone suffered through a similar situation?  How long did it take?

I'm also interested in meeting like-minded folks, as I moved here knowing essentially no-one.  Anybody interested in getting together for a pint?

I'm using the term "hacker" in it's original sense: one who tinkers with computers or other electronics for fun or for the pursuit of knowledge. Not the kind that breaks into your network... though there's lots of crossover between the two.

Hello toxic! Welcome to Geekzone. San Francisco is a nice place, been there a few times and always keen to go back...

Not sure about the problems with your DSL connection, but if you could settle for a lower bandwidth service (and if available in your area) you could try Woosh.

As for the beers, johnr is in AKL, and a few others. We are soon having the Geekzone 2006, but registrations are now closed (limited seats). But more is coming soon.

I'm in the City, not far from the ferry building, and about 50 metres from the port of Auckland.
