Good Morning,

I have recently purchased a laptop for a young friend to assist her with her schoolwork; she lives in a isolated area without internet access.
She plans to use the internet at the local public library and download any data she requires to her laptop via a usb stick.

I am concerned that she may transport viruses along with her data.

I thought I might load antivirus software on her USB stick; I am then a little confused as to the process she should then follow

1. Which antivirus software can run from a usb stick
2. The antivirus software needs to update the virus definitions; should she do this before or after downloading her data from the internet
3.  Should the antivirus software be run against the usb stick or her laptop or both

I would appreciate any thoughts as to how I might keep her laptop safe

Thank you

I understand the "USB stick" is a 3G mobile data modem then?

If that's the case you will install the antivirus on your friend's laptop, not on the modem, just like any other antivirus. If you are looking for a good free antivirus try Microsoft Security Essentials.

Agreed, Microsoft Security Essentials is great, in my experience I have found it has less of an imprint on the operating system compared to others I have encountered such as AVG, Avast!, McAfee. It is also free and has a large company backing (ie Microsoft) to it. It has also removed and found some BronTok virus variants that AVG missed a few years ago and haven't had problems with it since. The only thing to note is sometimes it takes "forever" to finish its startup process (ie the notification icon goes Green not Red) but it is normal behaviour.

Thank you for your prompt responses.

The USB stick is a 8GB USB flash drive

The setup file will fit fine, and Security Essentials will just update when it detects an internet connection.

I have downloaded MSE but cannot install it on a USB flash drive; there is no option to allow me to install it anywhere except on my computer.

Youll need a portable AV solution.... something like this

Install it onto her computer, then it will just keep itself running in the background and update when there is an internet connection (ie connected to a Net Cafe) best way of keeping the computer protected. You can run a portable antivirus such as ClamAV from your USB Drive, but that won't be protecting her computer.

Ideally the anti-virus is installed on the laptop and runs as a laptop service.  This 'laptop' AV will scan any downloaded data along with any data on the usb drive.

For your scenario, running the AV from the usb drive offers no additional benefits than installing it on the laptop and only adds an unnecessary layer of complexity.

Installing the AV on the USB is not a good plan. Users can disable the automatic execution of programs from the USB. The AV must be installed on her laptop.

Agree. Install AV on the computer that will receive the USB.

For extra safety you could instruct the user to scan the removable drive before accessing any files on that drive. I do not currently use MSE so maybe someone here can explain the details exactly how to do that.

MSE usually scans removable drives automatically.
