Hi,

My sister in law, has a HP Netbook, 9 months old purchased from Warehouse Stationary (WS).
The AC adapter is faulty & wont charge the computer.
She went to WS to get it sorted under warranty, but the guy there says that the AC Adapter only has 6 months warranty, only the laptop has 1 year.

This doesn't sound right to me? Is there some known precedent for this?
Have any of you had this happen? Or are they trying to get out of their statutory obligations under the consumers guarantees act.
I suggested that she ask him to put that in writing.

Thanks

Sounds like they may have confused the adapter with the battery (which is usually only covered for 6 months). There's no way an adapter should only last 6 months.

Heres a test, if you remove the battery does the laptop turn on when plugged into the adapter?

Sounds like rubbish to me, most of the major manufacturers will cover failure of the AC adapter as part of the standard warranty - at least for the first 12 months, unless it's caused by wear and tear / physical damage. As tchart says, the battery often has a shorter warranty (6 or 12 months, regardless of extended warranty etc).

The warranty is irrelevant, given that you are unable to charge the laptop without this item, six months is clearly neither a "reasonable" nor "acceptable" period of time for this item to fail.

Tell them that they need to replace or repair it under the CGA, if they refuse , don't leave until they put that in writing and then say that you will see them in the disputes tribunal and will advise the Ministry of consumer affairs,

As and aside the W/house are usually pretty good at replacing defective items,
Sounds like the guy might have got out of bed on the wrong side...
