I have to say I mirror this persons sentiment. If these are correct it feels like the wrong thing for MS to have done. More expensive isn't what our customers are looking for, it pretty much puts them out of reach of anyone that MIGHT have been considering one I think.

I really liked the Surface RT but understand it's a hard sell in some regards, the biggest thing about them is they are so much lighter and slimmer.

What a load... He should compare the Surface prices to a MacBook Pro - we're talking an Intel i3, i5 or i7 laptop with convenient touch screen and up to 512GB storage. This is no "iPad-class" device.

Different devices is Surface and iPad. When you talk Core i7, 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD you are talking laptop-class devices, not "iPad" toy.

Well I guess so, but the price difference of an Ipad to a Surface Pro is pretty huge. No question, the Ipad is a consumption device and MS Tablets were the first I've seen able to be productive on. I am not saying I don't like them, I am just saying I agree that the entry level is expensive. Also I'd be keen to hear from MS as to whether it's likely the tablets will get Windows 9 or whatever it will be called. I'd have to imagine it would, they are basically PC's at the end of the day and most PC's purchased today would expect to be able to run the next OS version.

If anyone buys a Surface Pro to replace an iPad, then it's a waste of money. That would be a Surface, not Pro. Specs support completely different use cases: professional vs consumer.

Macbook Airs are cheap now, that's a likely comparison device specs wise.

When I owned my Surface Pro 2, it really wasn't fun. It was heavy, kickstand was awkward and pen wasn't accurate in regions of the screen.

It was plenty fast...but I think you need to be a specific type of corporate customer to enjoy this device (several friends who work in corporate/IT environments have been assigned them) but as a creative device it's not great, especially since Windows and it's software isn't all optimised to that screen size.

I think if they made the Surface 3 (non pro) an Atom, I would buy that!

I think comparisons to iPad Air are wrong.

billgates: How is Windows not optimised for 1920 x 1080 which is what the Surface Pro uses? Or which application that is not optimised for 1920 x 1080?

Creative apps like Adobe CS. Microsoft can blame who it likes, but Adobe software still isn't user friendly on high DPI devices..a real pain with the inaccurate Wacom pen (even after calibration) that is included.

Its for people who want to get stuff done. To write not just read, to compose not just listen, to create not just watch

If you find it too expensive, that's fine there are loads of other Windows hybrid tablet devices in the market from OEMs like Asus T100 at NZ$589 incl that meet those needs

The announcement tomorrow is going to be for an amazing productivity device, I can assure you of that

Seems a strange thing really. People who buy iPads, in my experience aren't looking to do the same things you are suggesting a Surface is targeted for. At twice the price or more for the entry level product, there seems to be a bit of the puzzle missing.

I guess put more simply, if you are targeting Apple consumers, then why do it with a device designed for a difference purpose at a much higher price?

I didn't know they were going to call it Surface Pro 3. I thought the two new devices were the surface pro mini and maxi (for want of a name) with the larger display. The release is tomorrow (tonight) some time so wait and see I guess.

Now that I have the type-2 keyboard, realistically I think in a couple of years when I upgrade, I'll probably go for the unit with the larger screen.
