Ring their customer support then and ask them for help. That's one of the advantages of paying money for software!

I agree with JohnR (hey, theres a third time for everything - right?). I would ditch NAV even though its paid for, and go with Avast.

All you AVG Free users should try Avast too... its much less annoying than AVG. (Does all its updates quietly without bothering you for a start).

You will find that Symantec support for NAV is appaling sometimes no replies to e-mail, or the person replying clearly can't understand the problem - even with step-by-step instructions.

I actually bought NAV a few times, and Norton Internet Security (the software actually is based on the old AtGuard Firewall, the best in its class), but currently I only have Avast on my desktops and tablet PC, and Avast Server on Windows Server machines (this is not free, and not cheap, but worth it).

From experience it can be a very involved process correcting a corrupted installed. I've had to do this more than a few times on customers machines. It's doable, but it's going to take you a while.

Or alternatively you can always re-install the machine. That's one quick way of fixing the problem. : )

My last foray with Nortons was 2002 security suite. I liked it, but when it came to troubleshoot a problem caused me to spend far too much time searching symantec website. I found the solution but the time spent on the computer should be for entertainment or work, not for fixing problems.

If you search their site I am sure that you will find a solution, one thing that was horrifyingly noticeable is that the often strange unique problem you are experiencing, someone else would be having the same problem.... guaranteed.
Uninstalling Nortons is probably the single hardest thing to do in my opinion. It just seem to leave bits all over the place which I suspect is what you are experiencing. I recall having to use one of their own tools with the name RNAV (this is going back a few years so dont know if it is still required for your version).

I understand your reluctance to dispose of a product your have paid for but I would take heed to what others are saying here - maybe when it is time to re-register, consider the free options available. I did. AVG was my choice.

This is not to say all Symantec products are bad. Their enterprise soluions are good (Norton AV Corporate is different from the consumer edition), and Norton Ghost is a great product (no surprise it was originally developed in New Zealand and bought by Symantec a few years back).

I actually bought a Maxtor III 1TB external HDD and have Norton Ghost on my desktop, creating a full image of my system every second day and hourly incremental backups. I also am running Symantec LiveState on my home server, which is the same software but with additional functionality (support for Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft SQL backups without downtime).
