Stan: I would probably go for this it is an i5 but it is a very fast i5 http://www.computerlounge.co.nz/notebooks/componentview.asp?partid=22967

Quite nice. For a mostly working laptop that'd pack pretty good punch on those occasions when gaming is the go. Considering a laptop upgrade sometime, but I think I'll get one with one of the 9xx cards given they are quite a big jump up in performance over the 8xx series.

Yep DDR 3.

Also worth noting the keyboard is NOT backlit as Computer Lounge had stated. No biggie, I just wanted it for the coolness factor.

I've been playing FarCry 3 on Ultra settings with excellent frame rates, and the first time I've been able to run Microsoft Flight Simulator X at full details settings. It does get pretty warm so you worth hitting the fan boost button, but its not too bad, and with headphones on you dont notice the fan.

So far very happy with it, thanks to the poster that suggested this model.

What OS are you running FSX on ?

I'm going to build a new pc soon and ability to play FSX and maybe Ubisoft flight Sims is a priority.
What thinking of W7 pro to maximise compatibility.

Yeah I too was thinking of taking off Windows 8.1 and going back to 7 for FSX, but so far I have had no real issues with compatibility. The addon aircraft and scenery I use work fine so far. Great framerates.

One issue I did have is related to the OS being 64 bit, it would crash to desktop after only a few minutes flying.

A bit of research led me to download this UIautomationcore.dLL which fixed the issue immediately. Affects XP/7 and 8 as FSX was never designed to run on 64bit operating systems. Since then, smooth flying!

Yeah going great so far no issues at all. Its survived several work trips overseas and its been the first time I've been able to game on a plane! Being able to play FarCry really made two 15 hour flights go a lot faster! Been using it a lot for Microsoft Flight Simulator and DCS Blackshark and its never crashed, get great frame rates. Being a gaming laptop yeah of course it gets hot and the fan is noisy, but who cares when you have headphones. On the subject of sound it has the best laptop speakers I've ever come across, really great quality and decent bass. Runs an external monitor nicely.

The specs on that version look great, I'm sure it will cane anything you can throw at it.

Battery is pretty crap, as I would expect at this pricepoint.

I get 1.5-2 hours using for basic internet, music, MS Word.

Crank up a game like FarCry and its barely made it to 1 hour with notable performance drop.
