Thinking of buying this Acer laptop, mainly for working from home but also for some light gaming when I'm stuck in the back of a long distance flight several times a year. I'm totally out of touch with graphics card technology these days.

Its got a 1.8Ghz i7 4500U, 1Tb Hdd, 8Gb DDR3 RAM and the GeForce GT 720M 2Gb graphics.

I'm wondering what kind of games will run on that platform....

Namely strategy stuff like Civilization V, Rise of Empires, Simcity 4, would I get away with running those?

And then maybe simulation and shooter stuff like Subway Simulator, X-Plane, FSX, Farcry 1 or 2, GTAIV? Or would that be pushing it?

I
'd say you'll be able to run most of the stuff listed at lower detail (ex maybe GTA)....

If you can, go into PB and see if they will let you access this from the laptop (if they have a demo model) to check what it thinks of the games on that laptop.

If you can live without the the touch screen you can score a laptop with an 840M GPU for a lower price (according to pricespy):

The 720M seems a tad on the underpowered side for that price point.

Cool thanks guys.

I actually would rather ASUS over Acer any day so thanks for sharing that list, I didnt think they had anything with those specs in my budget.

I have 730m with i7 Quad Core. It performs ok with middle setting for most titles, but don't expect a great performance on high settings.

Acer Aspire V3-771G i7 - 17.3" Quad Core i7-3632QN 3.2Ghz 16GB Memory 1TB Hard Disk 1920x1080P AG SCREEN GT730M 4GB GRAPHICS

Quite liking the look of the specs of this Gigabyte P15Fv2, but cant find any decent reviews of it anywhere:

Intel i7-4710MQ 2.5GHz 16GB 1TB 15.6" FHD LED 1920x1080 GTX850M 2GB DVDRW Win8.1 64bit 2yr 6Cell BT4 eSATA GLan HDMI USB3 Webcam WiFiN - w/HDD Cage support Dual Hard Drive

http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z=p&p=NBKGBM01521B&name=Gigabyte-15.6-P15Fv2-Gaming-Notebook-Intel-i7-4710

Was also tempted by the Acer Nitro V7-571G, but was put off by some very average reviews.

Hmmmm....Gigabyte has great specs but no idea about their build quality etc...

Nice one thanks, I couldnt find any reviews apart from the Youtube ones so that was good to read.

I note the guy on notebookforums ended up returning his complaining of poor display and battery life. Display specs look good to me, and 2-3 hours for an i7 whilst gaming would be the norm no? If I want 10 hours battery I'd just use my tablet.

Looks like there's nothing else close to those specs for $1650.

Stoked with the GE60. Its very fast and nicely designed for gaming. Not as bulky as I thought either. Screen is great and has the best sound I've ever heard from a laptop, the creative soundblaster really makes a difference.

Only gripe was it was advertised with a backlit keyboard but in reality doesnt have one, slight messup by computer lounge I assume.

Was very sorely tempted with the GE70 Apache Pro - i7 + 860m.

Build quality etc alright on the GE60? What's the weight like.

Quality feels decent, chassis is rigid and nicely finished. Top of screen is the standard brushed aluminum. Keyboard is great, really like the response. Some people online say they dislike the touchpad, I've found it fine but will be using external mice anyways.

I really liked the specs of the Apache Pro but was beyond my budget for a work laptop. Even having the word "gaming laptop" on the invoice was probably pushing it :)

Yeah - mine was to be my 30th present to myself - so only had to get past the CFO (my wife).

Its hard to tell for the computer lounge advert
