how many tabs are open and for how long? lol ... 3.6GB of RAM on chrome!

You also mention that Outlook is showing as a bit of a memory hog also (no real surprises there)...what's the reason for using the Outlook client? Who is her email provider, and can she use an online client for it?

Yea ill be visiting my mum in a month so Ill look into moving her onto another client then, It was easier for me to tell her to use another browser over the phone as a quick fix. But i was wondering about that and your comment has solidified that thought process

TeamViewer is how I do remote support for my parents. I can log in any time without them having to OK it.

Im always tempted to do this but it would never end. I would end up remote helping my Partners parents, my mum, my family in CHCH, my family in England and my aunt in Seatle. it would never end

There's a limit of 5 computers on a free account. I've found once you set things up properly they rarely need attention, but depends on your users.

May i suggest you ask them to subscribe to an annual service plan for a fee

. You can give them a family discount..

ask them to shut down chrome when they stop browsing, will that help the RAM usage build up

How often does she shut it down and how nay tabs does she have open at one time.

I've noticed even though you may have closed a programme like Chrome when you go into Task Manager you will still see more than one entry for Chrome taking up memory. Either you close them in Task Manager or do a restart. Restart is my preferred option.

I use Outlook and have never had a problem with it. I see no earthly reason to use another email client or use a webmail app in a situation like this. If you think Outlook is causing a problem clean out old emails that are no longer needed, if there's stuff in the emails, like photos, that you want to keep save them in another folder then delete the email. I don't see a problem like you're describing being exclusive to Outlook. The email or PST files can get pretty big get rid of the junk in there and there's less stuff taking up space.

Having too many programmes and tabs open at once doesn't help. I use the following analogy to get people to understand. I tell them the hard drive is like a filing cabinet and the RAM is your office desk or work space. Your desk can only handle so many items before it become full or crowded, then your work rate decreases.

The same happens with your computer. The computer has the ability to temporarily put files back in to a holding bin in the filing cabinet to ensure it has enough work space or RAM however this process uses computing effort and there is less ability left to do the jobs you want it to do. Therefore don't have too many programmes or tabs open at once.

Another thing to consider is the amount of free hard disk space. If it goes below 15% you will notice a decrease in performance.

Oh, also if it is still giving you issues after all this. I would suggest factory resetting the laptop. Google what key to press on start up. But of course you will need to back all data off the laptop as it will all be wiped.

Also once it is factory reset you will want to uninstall all the not required programs.
